Details:
Crystal Deep is an acoustic rock band from Potsdam, NY. The band was started in 2006 by Josh Butler (Lead Vocals/Guitar), and is joined by Patrick Gavin-Brynes (Bass), Paul Byrd (Lead Guitar) and Aaron Downing (Percussion). The bright acoustic resonance, and deep lyrics are accented by a demanding bass foundation and a brilliant lead electric thatâs as smooth as butter when it needs to be, and heavy when thereâs a point to be made.

I was born in Pryor, Oklahoma and moved to Watkins Glen, New York at the age of 5. When I was 10 my brother bought a Fender and I started teaching myself how to play. Some good friends of mine loved Metallica, so naturally every song I knew was metal. I loved it, but never took it seriously.

I was always into music. I played snare drum in a marching band when I was 10 and played trumpet from 5th grade until now. The defining moment in my passion for music was when I graduated from high school and my parents bought me my first acoustic guitar for going away to college. I loved that thing. Its sound drove me to a new style and I used it all through college. When I was a senior I went to a local club event on campus (open mic at Club 99). I was there with some friends and remember saying âI can definitely do thatâ. It grew on me! I soon upgraded my old guitar and was on my way. Itâs a disease, the best habit Iâve ever had.

My first year of grad school I met Jesse Bonanno at an open micâ¦awesome musician. I asked to play together sometime and it was another milestone. Jesse taught me more than I could ever ask for. Soon after becoming friends with Jesse I started writing my own music. So with the influences of everyone around me, especially my roommate Chris who introduced me to the Goo Goo Dolls, my sound developed into what I have today. As far as parents go, I could not ask for any better support in every decision I've ever made.

Paul Byrd
I was raised in Clifton Park, New York with my brother and sister. I was involved in wrestling and orchestra in high school. In my senior year I picked up a guitar for my first time after hearing Pink Floydâs âWish You Were Hereâ album. Having a background in musical theory and stringed instruments made the transition from violin to guitar much easier. I took formal lessons from Kenny Hohman of Super 400 for several months before going to school at Clarkson University. I am currently a junior going for a B.S. in civil engineering with a concentration in structural engineering.

Aside from playing guitar in several bands, I enjoy the outdoors, relaxing with friends, being a brother of Tau Epsilon Phi fraternity, watching football, and the list goes onâ¦

Aaron Downing
I was born and raised in central New Hampshire where the lakes meet the mountains. Originally raised on oldies, my taste in music is a made up of a huge variety of genres. I have to thank my brother for finally introducing me to Green Day, Nirvana, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones and many other bands that really influenced my playing style during its infancy. The most notable influences on me during this time were the beats of Sublime's Bud Gaugh. I began playing drums (starting with concert snare, then all percussion and jazz band) in school 11 years ago, back when I was in 5th grade.

That pretty much brings me to where I am today, pushing on through Clarkson trying to complete my Civil engineering degree. I also play guitar and some harp. These were forced upon me because dorm life was not conducive to a drum set, but I love them now as much as playing a kit.
