ERNEST (ERNIE) NEWSOM
A resident of Murfreesboro, TN, where he resides with his wife, Nolia, began playing music at the age of 14 by joining the Manassas High School Band, Memphis ,TN there he played the clarinet and majored in music. After graduation, he attended Johnson C. Smith University , Charlotte, N.C. and played two years. He later dropped his interest in playing music and concentrated on academic pursuits in Psychology which earned him the B.S. and M.S. degrees. He later earned the M Div in Divinity , (Louisville Presbyterian Seminary), and Doctorate of Ministry in Pastoral Care, (Chicago Theological Seminary). He was then appointed as a Chaplain for the Department of Veterans Affairs, (Veterans Administration) for 21 years. During that time he was appointed as Chief Chaplain(GM-13) at the Alvin C. York VAMC, Murfreesboro, TN where he retired in 1998. During that twenty one year span, he also served as a Naval Reserve Chaplain and earned the rank of CAPTAIN (06) and was appointed Command Chaplain for the Reserves Sixth Fleet in Atlanta, GA.
Since retirement, âErnieâ decided to return back to his ârootsâ in music. He not only plays the clarinet but plays the alto, tenor and soprano saxes. Ernie plays with passion and conviction which reaches âway backâ to his birth place, Memphis. He has a unique style of blending his rich jazz heritage with his spiritual fervor. All of the experiences mentioned in the above and many more have provided âErnieâ with the tools, insight, and wisdom that he has incorporated in this CD. âErnieâ sees his music as a tremendous gift from God that he enjoys sharing with others.
