Details:
Tatevik Sazandarian, one of the greatest and most versatile singers in Armenian music history, was born in 1916 in Khondzoresk, village of Zangezur, Armenia, to a family of a school teacher. In 1929 her parents moved to Moscow where her career as a singer began in a factory amateur group.
Her unique and pure voice, a natural way of producing sounds, attracted the attention of specialists at once. She started vocal lessons with S. Barkhudarian, simultaneously attending the theater studio of Ruben Simonov. In 1937 T. Sazandarian was invited to take the position of a soloist in the recently established Yerevan State Opera Theater. In 1939, with the role of Almast (opera âAlmastâ by A. Spendiarov), she shocked music specialists and fans in Moscow, where the First Decade of Armenian Culture was taking place. After Almast she wonderfully performed parts of Parandzem in the opera âArshak IIâ by Chukhadjian, and Tamar in the opera âDavid Bekâ by A. Tigranian.
These three roles bought a great name to Tatevik Sazandarian; her vocal art has been considered as a highest-standard classical opera singing of her time. She had enormous success in the leading roles of Lubasha, Carmen, Amneris, Dalila; in classical Western European and Russian operas.
Tatevik Sazandarian was a great master of chamber vocal-pieces singing, as well. She has premiered numerous works created especially for her by known Armenian composers. In her huge repertoire, there were over 450 songs brilliantly performed by the singer during her long, creative life.
Armenian romances and traditional songs, as well as masterpieces of Sayat Nova and gousan Sheram where in the list of her favorite songs.
Among great Armenian voices Tatevik Sazandarian has a very special position of the artist who, in her unique singing, combined the harmony of Western classical and Armenian traditional music, which is what placed her on the highest step of vocal and stage mastery.
