Details:
Sharps AKA Ryan Dorward, was born in the fading glow of the late 70's, into a house of perfect yellow sunshine, a warm black cat, radio transmissions, and loving parents in Edmonton, Alberta. At age 5 he was transplanted along with his brother, Colin Muir (fellow CD baby artist) and family to the distant and tropical island of Singapore.
Upon moving to the bizarre land of technology and jungles, Sharps became immersed in the surrounding amphibious creatures and circuit boards, ferns and computers, expat kids and computer programming. Growing up, he developed a yearning to create connections amongst these things, to find structure between these bits of technology, biology and people.
Five years later he moved back to his homeland, and the catalyst arrived: the boys were given a cheap kid's keyboard, the famed Casio SK-1. With its built in sampler and basic synthesis, it was an enigmatic machine, layered with subtle mystery. After years of noodling on this prototype for electronic music, Sharps encountered raving and the music of Aphex Twin, which was the turning point where he realized his passion. Quickly he assembled a rudimentary studio, acquired a couple of the classic analogue keyboards, a sampling sound card and some software, and laid down some basic tracks, the groundwork from which his current sound has evolved.
Sharps was awarded the Hugh Le Cain Award for Young Composers in 2002 for his experimental work "Underlying Fabric". Definately challenging listening, the track is an arcane sonic representation of our deepest psychological drives, a concept which came to extend throughout the otherwise rolling album, "Infinite Love 666".
Sharps is co-owner of record label Saedos Records, and member of the Rixen Rockers which performed live at Mutek 2007, as well as in Vancouver and Edmonton.
Lately Sharps' tracks have been burning through the underground dance community, getting rave reviews and heavy rotation by dj's from the west coast to the UK.
