ANTOINETTE FILANOWSKA
Antoinette Filanowska's career as a pianist has spanned over three decades of teaching and performing in the United States, Europe and New Zealand. She is well known for her accomplished solo performances of ragtime piano, in which she presents a mix of classical and ragtime piano music with an informed narrative on each of the composers and their music. Her concerts include works by Scott Joplin and other great American ragtime composers, such as Joseph Lamb, Tom Turpin, and Arthur Marshall, along with classical works by Bach, Mozart, Debussy, and Beethoven.
"Music to Stir the Memories" is a journey through the heart of ragtime with a special homage to women ragtime composers such as Adaline Shepherd, Sadie Koninsky, and Julia Lee Niebergall. As ragtime composer Scott Joplin said, "Play slowly till you can catch the swing..." Audiences and musicians alike have been catching the swing more and more in recent years â Antoinette hopes that you will, too!
"Here is a music that will lift your spirits. It struts, and laughs, and giggles, and sings - sometimes confidentially, sometimes brazenly. This is music from social clubs and comfy meeting rooms, with liquor and cigars. The women in this music can be coy or flagrantly seductive. The men are confidently friendly: come on in, I'll show you a good time!
Antoinette not only picks out all the lovely filigree, and describes the broad good humor - her affection for the music demonstrates what a good party might be.
I have used this CD on long, lonely trips when a good-humored friend really means something. I have laughed out loud at the mischievous rhythms in "Pickles and Peppers" and listened attentively to the tenderness in "Solace." It's gently rollicking fun!" - Maryanne Appleby
