K. Brent Coppenbarger received his Doctorate of Musical Arts degree in clarinet performance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he became interested in composing. "Fly in the Pie" was composed using a Roland JV-1000 and several tone generators. The music is in a traditional, polyphonic style, influenced by jazz, with a strong rhythmic pulse.

Dr. Coppenbarger teaches at a liberal arts college in South Carolina. He lives with his wife, two children, two cats, dog, and several fish. Fly In The Pie (title song) depicts a picnic that goes badly wrong. Free Fall is a dream of falling.

The Newborn Child was composed on the birth of Dr. Coppenbarger's first child. Cassiopeia's Journey represents the life of the Siamese cat, Cassie, who was an indoor cat and never actually went anywhere. The Home Coming was composed for the second child.

Soul of the Dove is a dream of flying. Fantasy for Sonja was written for Dr. Coppenbarger's wife. Dr. Coppenbarger has forgotten what made him write Cosmic Mind Lapse, but it was very important at the time. He wrote The Brook to help his children get to sleep.
