Hi-Top Sneakers notes for CDbaby site
"Hi-Top Sneakers" is a joyful, rootsy romp led by accordionist Dan "Daddy Squeeze" Newton. Dan and an all-star cast of musicians give you almost an hour of swing, jugband, blues, country, polka, and cumbia, with a couple beautiful waltzes thrown in. Dan is joined by Pat Donohue, Bob Ekstrand and Steve Kaul on guitars, Brian Wicklund on fiddle and mandolin, bassist Gary Raynor, Clint Hoover on harmonica, Tom Lewis on bass, Tom Wells on tuba, vocalist Jon Rodine, and percussionists Marc Anderson, Dehl Gallagher and Elizabeth Rowan.
Dan "Daddy Squeeze" Newton has dazzled audiences with his unique accordion style for decades. His appearances with "A Prairie Home Companion", Cafe Accordion Orchestra, Jumbo Ya Ya, Daddy Squeeze & the Dr, and countless others have gained him a reputation as a talented and versatile musician. On "Hi-Top Sneakers" Dan showcases his song-writing skills, presenting 13 original tunes and songs that have been among the favorites of his fans over the years.
He has appeared on recordings by Prudence Johnson, Peter Ostroushko, Peter Mayer, Ann Reed, The Proclaimers, Son Volt, and Neal & Leandra.
Dan âDaddy Squeezeâ Newton knows most music fans just want to shake their butt, and heâs happy to help on this rootsy solo CD, showcasing the good-natured humor and world-music mastery that has made him the Twin Citiesâ go-to accordionist. Newton has dropped the French-influenced sound of his Café Accordion Orchestra in favor of Western swing and gospel stomps. âRattle Them Bonesâ and âPut Your Snout to the Spoutâ sound straight from A Prairie Home Companion (Newton is a frequent guest), while âThe Yohnnie B Goode Polkaâ takes the accordionistsâ tradition of ethnic puns to its illogical conclusion.
