HELLO IâM Helen McCall !
I was born in Ashburn Ga. the baby daughter of a share-cropper, named Eugene Mitchell and his wife Addie Mae Spillers Mitchell, who later bought a 350 acre farm near Atlanta where I began my singing career.
Although I began singing at an early age of 3, it wasnât untill I was 8 that I began singing on the Radio in Roberta, Ga. Brenda lee sang on the program before us. They had to stand us on Co-cola crates for us to reach the microphone. back then there was only one huge microphone and no T.V. at all. I probably wasnât 3 feet high and she was smaller than me.
By the time I was 12, I was singing all over Ga. and Ala. with my brother and sister as The Mitchell Family; everybody said we sounded like the Chuck Wagon Gang. Everywhere we went I had to sing Silent Night, I love the song but I always felt funny singing it when it wasnât Christmas time. We sang in auditoriums, churches, tent meetings and street meetings.things werenât as confined in those days as they are now. I canât remember not singing.
My daddy was the president of The Gosple Music Association and we had big singers such as Hobie Lister & The Sunlighterâs , The Browns, The original Blackwood Brothers and many more singers came to our house and spent the night after the singings. We lived in a big Colonial Home On Ingram Rd. in Barnesville Ga. GrandPa lived near by. He was an old fashioned music teacher
who taught us to sing by a tuning fork. He would make the key and weâd sing by it. GrandPa would tell us to open our mouths 3 fingers wide. I thought sometimes my mouth would break.
Daddy and my Brother built a church on the farm and that is where Naomi and The SeGoâs sang their fist song. I remember that was the year T.V. first came out and they told Naomi that she could sing but she better not talk in that funny language, We all gathered round the one T.V. that somebody had; to watch and guess what? She opened her mouth to sing and out came those unknown tongues.
After I married I sang on the radio with B.J. & The Country Boyâs and Miss Helen. which was country. We stayed on the radio about five years, during this time I had the
oppertunity to sing on The Porter Wagnor show in Griffin Ga., but my band got cold feet and backed out on me and I didnât have $50.00 to pay Porter to play for me. I
remember another time I sang at the State Fair in Griffin Ga. with a band I had never sang with, I forgot my words to the song. which was Then And Only Then, I turned, looked at the band, went directly into another song. Nobody knew I messed up.
I wrote my first country song in 1970 and did the copyright on it in 2003, which I added to my Country Songs Album
I started traveling in 1976 with my little son Keith Atkinson, who was five at the time. He sang also and later played the drums for me and sang untill He was 17 years old. We were The Mitchellâs, then The McCallâs and then The Jacksonâs.
I started singing again on the radio in 1985 in Moultrie Ga. continued untill 1999, when I had a stroke. This was when I seriously began writing songs. I wrote Lord Let Me Feel Your Spirit when I was in the Hospital. I couldnât feel the Spirit inside me, I knew it was there but I was on powerful drugs and they take away your ability to focus in on things, so The Lord gave me that song.
In 2000 I started my Steps of faith Ministery on Maranatha T.V. untill 2003, I also had a Radio Ministry by the same name. During this time I wrote about 45 of my songs.
In 2001, right after 911: I wrote my America At War Album about the terriost. and America going into war. A dynamanic rendition of the bombing of the Twin Towers.
Ttack 1 is about a little girl who wishes she could sit on her daddyâs knee. Track 2 is One Of These Days, God gave me this to ashure the people that when all this was over there would be peace one of these days. Track 3 is America Youâre At warâ As I sing this song I an proud to be an American and live in one nation under God where there is love. As I sing Track 4 As Freedom Rings I canât help but cry as I say the words âIf I But Had One Life To Live, For Freedomâs Sake Iâd Freely Giveâ I think about our America Solders and I believe that is what they say as they defend this nation; last but not least is Beauty For Ashes, in which God gives us soothing words to remove all the pain and anquish . I also wrote my Album Hear My Cry for my Battered Womenâs Ministry that year. I have a Country singer friend by the name of Cleveland Warnock who inspired me to write my Country Album; â Charityâs Country Songs,â I really love the one called Broken Hearts Donât Cry. ( They donât you know). Then in 2003 I bought a computer published my songs on Media Player. All my songs, Steps Of faith Ministry, Songbooks & Teaching Manual, Logo âFATH RECORDSâ are copywrighted under Steps Of Faith Ministry. I already had my federal & state tax ID. When I sent my last songs to the copyright office; I also added a copyright to my website âhttp://www.stepsoffaithministeries.com in 2005.
2005 I wrote these Albumâs; The Great I Am,, Running Back To You, & Helenâs Bluegrass which features a song about my ex-husband who was dying and I didnât know it. The name of it is Iâm Going Home.
I now have my own website http://www.misshelenandherkeyboard.com
I make my Cdâs with Faith Records Lable and print the lable on them. I write all of my songs, compose the music, write songbooks, teaching manuals & poems, I have a Battered Womenâs Ministry and Helping Hands Ministry, founded by my Sister Dolorese Mitchell & Helen McCall, which consist of filling boxes with necessary items for the needy which they canât afford such as tooth-paste,soap, tooth-brushes toilet-paper,dish-liquid,antibacteria soap etc. and distributing free to the needy. This is faith-based, people fill boxes for us and we give them away/ All donations are appreciated and guaranteed to be given away.
Starting In Nov. 07 I started making DVD's and that's fun.
I'm still singing Gospel, but I also sing Country in Meigs Ga. and pelham Ga. on Friday & Saturday nights.
I wish I could tell about every song, but that would take hours , because I have 70; so please visit my websites, also visit CD Baby and fill your cart.
I hope you enjoy your musical tour.
May God Bless You
