Details:
"Sweet singer of Israel, Lisa Lipkin, is the sweet voice of the Jewish soul" Maggid Yitzhak Buxbaum
Lisa Jane Lipkin has created a unique collection of Jewish prayers and chants anchored in traditional texts and innovated by her original compositions. Each song on A PRAYER FOR PEACE Lipkin touches the heart of Jewish prayer by beautifully blending Judaismâs ancient beliefs with original and contemporary musical expressions. Like many of her peers Lipkinâs search for spirituality lead her to discover the mystical teachings of her Jewish roots. And while the ideas expressed in these new songs spring from ancient tradition, the voice is Lipkinâs unique interpretation of experiencing the Divine. From start to finish there is a palpable sense of devotion and love for the Holy One and the joy of connecting with God.
âAlthough this has been a personal journey, in true Jewish fashion, it took a community to draw out this music,â according to Lipkin. Her Rabbi, synagogue community, Jewish teachers & friends, all lent encouragement and often made requests for original compositions now heard regularly in services at Lipkinâs synagogue.
Lisa Lipkin reminds us, once again, why the Hebrew word for breath and the Hebrew word for soul are one and the same. With every breath on this beautiful new CD, you can hear Lisa's soul â her neshama. And what a breath/soul it is! Enjoy! Rabbi Mark Sameth
Over the span of a few years Lipkin composed an impressive collection of sacred songs that now make-up A PRAYER FOR PEACE. Each song has an intention and a story. This is the Table was written for Tu BâShvat and utilizes the traditional sacred Jewish mode, Ahavah Rabah which means âinfinite love.â Adonai Malach was the first Hebrew prayer that Lipkin composed at the suggestion of her Rabbi and while Ze HaShulchan, is not her original melody â it was contributed by Jewish Storyteller, Yitzhak Buxbaum â Lipkinâs arrangement gives it the roots influenced sound prevalent throughout A PRAYER FOR PEACE. Bitachon was written in honor of Lipkinâs daughter who would become a Bat Mitzvah during the recording of A PRAYER FOR PEACE. In the final track, Shalom LâOlam written for a special Tisha bâav service with an emphasis on world peace, Lipkin wanted to simulate one voice singing, joined by another and another until the whole world is singing together. So she called upon âeveryone she knew who could carry a tuneâ and the result is a moving testament to the Jewish tradition of family and community coming together in prayer.
It is both a Jewish tradition and a trait of Lipkinâs generation to question and come to new understandings of religion and spirituality. Lisa journied along those questions and found her voice in A PRAYER FOR PEACE.
Lisa Jane Lipkin honed her singer/songwriting skills while traversing the open mike terrain of New Yorkâs Greenwich Village eventually finding her way to guest appearances at such prestigious venues as the NYC Mamapalooza, the Towne Crier, and the Tupelo Music Hall. She has opened for Dar Williams, Shemekia Copeland, and Brad Delp/Beatlejuice. Her compositions have earned spots on Basina Recordsâ Compilation CD for Gildaâs Club and the latest release by Aksara. She has recorded, arranged, and produced for other artists including Sandi Kimmel, Christine Pepe and Neal Gomberg. In 2005, Lipkin released her debut CD entitled RAISE THE HONEY.
A PRAYER FOR PEACE was produced and arranged by John Guth and Lisa Jane Lipkin. Additional vocals on Elohai Neshama provided by the quartet With Spirit Sings! comprised of Laurie Brown, Lisa Jane Lipkin, Rachel Seliber, and Christine Pepe. Additional vocals on Shalom LâOlam provided by Billy DeSiena, Laurie Brown, Dominique Hellsten, Christine Pepe, Rachel Seliber, Beth DeWit, John Guth, Kimberly Belotti, Kyra Werbin, and Robin Roy Katz.
