Details:
Oscar Edelstein
Argentinean composer, pianist, director, and researcher.
Born in La Paz, Entre Ríos.
Oscar Edelstein is considered one of the most important and original composers in Argentina. His work is profuse, and crucial in the map of Latin American contemporary music, new ópera, and performance.
As well as a composer, Edelstein is a pianist. For his last concert Rivers and Mirrors: Part I, a reviewer from ILAMS music society noted, Oscar Edelstein âpossesses a formidable pianistic techniqueâ¦There is an intensity to the work that rarely loses its edge.â (See www.riversandmirrors.com)
Edelstein created the ENS - Ensamble Nacional del Sur in 1997. His performances with the ENS were considered by specialist music critics as âthe most relevant musical events of recent decades in Argentinaâ, âthe highest point in the experimental production of the continentâ and âa historical imprint in the production of the avant-gardeâ. The ENS performed live the first section of the trilogy, La Teoría Sagrada del Espacio Acoustico in 2004 where the ENS performed in Argentina and Brazil to audiences of thousands, and recorded the work on a Super Audio disc.
Edelsteinâs chamber and electronic productions have attained several national and international awards. He has also directed many chamber groups of improvisation in music, frequently exploring the interplay between music and theatre. His important research programme into new musical theories and acoustic techniques, the Programa Prioritario de investigación Teatro Acústico, at the University of Quilmes, in 2006 became the first arts project to receive funding from the Agencia de Promocion Científica y Tecnologica dependiente del Ministerio de Educación.
Among his other works can be quoted the operas Klange Urutau, El Hecho (created and performed in 1997 and 1998 respectively), and El Tiempo - La Condena (created and performed in 1999). La Teoría Sagrada del Espacio Acústico â Libro I, Libro II: La Grilla Acústica, and Libro III: La Luz en Sombra de tus Ojos Muertos is a trilogy. They are all works grounded in the field of âthe extended theatre of musicâ, where Edelstein stresses a focus in voice, speech production and the interplay with technology.
His latest opera, Los Monstruito, commissioned by the experimental wing of Teatro Colon (CETC) was highly acclaimed. Based around the political era of Carlos Menem, it was the first work to cover this period. The libretto was written by Edelstein, adapting the poems of national poet, Enrique Rodolfo Fogwill. The Clarin reviewed it as âOriginal, innovative â some pieces are like from the anthology of operaâ and La Nación said, âOscar Edelstein opens new horizons for modern music and opera in Argentina.â
