I grew up in a musical family. My dad and mom both played the guitar and my dadâs brothers played banjo, guitar, mandolin, concertina, and accordion. We all sang, but no one had a more beautiful voice than my mother. I was stubborn about not taking time when I was a child about not learning to play an instrument. I was more apt to write a story, a poem or a song. When I grew up and moved away I missed the music so my mom taught me the basics over the phone. I kept writing songs and eventually began to sing them here and there. My father passed away at fifty three and my mom got MS at thirty seven. Some years later she got leukemia. Her strength and her faith and her love of singing have sustained her. She is still singing with me though not as much as she used to. She still plays her old beat up Fender guitar and she still sounds great.
I wanted to have something to cherish besides my memories of her and decided to take her to a studio to record some of the old time country music that she and I and my sister Janie always sang. I put a few pickers together and we spent about four hours in the studio singing and laughing. The CD isnât professional and thatâs just what I wanted. We laughed and had a ball doing it. Years from now I will be able to listen to my motherâs lovely voice and smile. In fact that was the inspiration for one of the songs on this album called, âThe Sweet Loving Arms of My Momâ.
After that first CD (for our own listening pleasure only) we started talking about all the songs I have written and some of them mom helped me with. That was how "Everything's Rosie" got started. The music for the songs comes easily. I always have a melody running through my head. All of these songs are inspired by personal things or people I have known. I think thatâs what country is all about. It makes you think and makes you take a good look at your life. I have lots of songs that are as yet not recorded. If this CD goes anywhere I will be recording more of them. I hope anyone hearing this album will have as much fun listening to it as I had in making it.
