Details:
They say not to judge a book by its cover. Never is that sentiment truer than in the case alternative nu-metal powerhouse EVEN X. With riffs that are as a fluid as they are unapologetically heavy, air-tight grooves and raging vocals, the EVEN X sound demands a synergy among the players. Mixed by Logan Mader (Puddle Of Mud, Junkie XL), the band's self-titled debut album is a brutal sonic landscape in which a swirling sea of melody and rhythm only assaults the senses, but surprisingly elevates the spirit as well.
The album's lyrics do not further a political agenda and are as equally neutral on issues of violence and religion. Instead, EVEN X see their music as tool of communication; not between man and his state, but rather between man and his state of mind. Their aim is to facilitate an internal spiritual resolve, not as possessors of enlightenment, but rather as fellow travels on the oftentimes bumpy road of life. While many of the band's contemporaries spend their time bemoaning their existence, EVEN X paint a picture from a more honest palate, in which life is neither black nor white but a gothic shade of grey. There are moments of desperation, such as in "Angry Mirror," but they are countered by the more positive undercurrents of "Awake," thereby underscoring the delicate balance of our existence.
The issues that the band brings to the surface may not be pretty, but they are the ties that bind humanity together. The end result is an unforgettable journey that stays with you long after the album has left your CD player. In the process, EVEN X has created an album that will not only kick your ass, but haunt your soul.
