Waking up in the Ding Dang district of Bangkok is no different than waking up in a jungle. It is a jungle, a 21st century jungle. There's just as much concrete as there is green, just as many people as there are trees. It's overgrown and overpopulated. It's dense, it's thick and it's unruly. The air is wet like a sauna, it drips from the leaves and clings to your skin. The forest grows up and out and so do the buildings. It sounds like a gigantic Asian aviary. When your eyes are closed it's hard to believe you're smack dab in the middle of a city the size of New York. It's like a wildlife refuge that's powered by 2-stroke engines, papaya salad and chilies. The birds are up with the sun. They flutter about like flying Buddhas, like kings, like enlightened beings tossing around Zen koans from wing to wing.

The birds of Thailand are colorful and vocal. They chirp and sing and coo and caw. Song birds are all over the place. Some sing directly into the mic and some create a racket from far away. Mysterious sounds drift up from the bush. Asian crows and other native birds fly by as if they are on their way to some little known conference in the sky. Roosters gather in the way back. Who knows what's gotten into them but they sure sound like they got a story to tell, full of personality with a charming and impeccably timed wail. You'd have to be a serious bird watcher to identify all of what's happening. But you don't have to be one to appreciate it. Bangkok Birds is a field recording that captures the sound of a whole bunch of exotic birds in their natural environment.
