After three years together playing live shows and writing songs, Abracastabya went into the studio in fall 2007 to record "Knees Together Ankles Crossed," a collection of the eclectic songs that leave critics and audiences alike at a loss for pigeonholing.

Abracastabya's genre-straddling music builds a template of haunting organ, piano and cello melodies on dreamy guitars and rock beats, mixing waltz rhythms, classical music inspiration and a few soulful acoustic pieces. The down-tempo, minor chords have left audiences and critics at a loss for a way to describe the music, with descriptions ranging from "experimental indie rock" to "shoegaze" to "creepy carnival music" to "art fag." Often conjuring images of dark horror movies, the band continues to experiment and create what its members hope is a balance of music and artistic invention.

Geoff Brent's rhythmic guitar riffs sway from mellow to intense, while David Grimm's drums provide a solid rock beat. Lauren Langley on cello crafts a haunting, sorrowful warmth beneath Willow Welter's lilting vocals and classical composition-inspired keyboard. Welter's voice rises and falls in intensity and pitch that overlays the eclectic rhythms. With guitars ranging from distorted fuzz to simple acoustic progressions and a cello that can provide either an embellishment or base to the songs, the drums help build
the keyboard- or guitar-driven songs to climaxes with ambivalent resolutions.

In Royal Recordings studio with Bill Douglass, who has recorded nobodies including Bauhaus, The Flaming Lips, Smashing Pumpkins, R. Kelley and Celine Dion, Abracastabya crafted "Knees Together Ankles Crossed," a canvas that called for a melodic and ultimately creepy painting. The band already is creating new songs and will release its first full-length album in February
2008.
