Vulnerable honesty is the recurring theme in Alexander Schultzâs debut CD, âIf You Forgive Me, Iâll Just Do It Again.â The Norwegian-born singer-songwriter of a style he calls âRockcousticâ is already a smash in his homeland. The upcoming release of his CD in the U.S., Canada and Britain is sure to make him a headliner across the world.
âWatching Without Words,â the CDâs first single, has already garnered much praise, including Honorable Mention in the 14th Official Billboard World Songwriting Contest; a nomination as âBest Rock Songâ at the 2007 Los Angeles Music Awards; and a semi-finalist nod in the 2007 UK Songwriting Contest. Alexander has also been awarded âBest International Pop Male Artistâ and âBest International Pop CD Albumâ of 2007 by the Canadian magazine Toronto Exclusive.
With over 10 years of gigging, Alexander has played in, written for and/or performed with heavy metal bands, jazz orchestras, country/roots ensembles, and electronica groups. Itâs his solo work, however, that is finally moving him front and center. In Norway, he has appeared live on several national television and radio programs; received extensive airplay; performed in many of Norwayâs hottest venues; and been featured in newspapers and magazines across Europe.
Alexander emphasizes that music has been a ânatural processâ for him since an early age, as basic as breathing, eating or drinking. Itâs who he is, his reason for getting up every morning. At six-years-old, older cousins introduced him to American music. For his seventh birthday, he received a copy of Bob Dylanâs Slow Train Coming, which he played repeatedly, much to his parentsâ distraction.
By the time he was a bit older, he had used an English/Norwegian dictionary to translate all of Dylanâs lyrics and became fascinated with his âmystical and beautifulâ command of words. That led to the discovery of other classic rock acts like The Band, Ian Hunter, Johnny Winter, Dire Straits, John Lennon, Peter Gabriel and David Bowie, among others. Each has had an influence on him as a singer, songwriter and artist. His real dream is to record with acclaimed singer/songwriter Daniel Lanois.
If You Forgive Me, Iâll Just Do It Again features a collection of eleven self-penned songs that strip Alexanderâs heart and soul bare. Watching Without Words, the lead-off single, is a melancholic yet stirring tune about the vulnerability of the individual in a modern society. In addition to the previously mentioned accolades, the song has also been chosen for several compilation albums.
Could It Be, a mid-tempo number driven by acoustic/electric guitars and banjo, reflects on the broad spectrum of keeping or losing faith while Until You Lose Track Of Me is an upbeat and energetic pop-song with a tasty guitar hook and bittersweet edge
The Worst Case Ever, with its infectious groove and satisfying melody, sneaks up on you the way a potential hit can. It has appeared on several compilations albums and has been deemed a major standout by many music critics.
Tonight, inspired by a poignant scene in the film Vanilla Sky, was written in ten inspired minutes. Alexander literally paused the DVD, picked up his guitar and recorded the session on his cell phone, then finished watching the movie. âItâs just one of those songs that happens to pop into your head at a certain moment, and you just hear the whole thing from beginning to end even before you start writing it,â he comments.
The Sweetest Thing offers a catchy bass line and sweet drumbeat as its backbone for a message of hope. She Donât Mind is a smooth reinvention of a 1998 radio hit that Alexander had with a local band, while Pilgrim, a song that pays homage to a friend, features a Resonator guitar that creates a nice blend of harmonies.
On Everythingâs Broken, the banjo drives the song forward in an unexpectedly energetic fashion, while Leave The Lights On, the last song recorded for the album, is pure pop with its appealing groove and melody. Finally, the title cut, If You Forgive Me, Iâll Just Do It Again, has a âmovie soundtrackâ vibe and a message that leaves its interpretation open to each and every listener.
The passionate truth that runs through Alexanderâs music comes from a Norwegian proverb his father taught him which he admits is hard to translate. The closest translation, he feels, is a quote by American singer-songwriter Ani DiFranco: âIf you donât live what you sing about, your mirror is gonna find outâ. For Alexander, itâs about being true to himself and his ideals, being honest in what he does. âBecause if you donât,â he adds, âit might very well backfire on you someday.â
Alexander Schultz lets his songs speak for him because, in his opinion, the things that matters most canât be described. âYouâre gonna have to show themâ¦your musicâ¦your talentâ¦your attitudeâ¦your determination.â A critic for Hugin magazine summed it up well: âItâs something about his subtle, yet rough voice - it embraces your eardrums. Backed up by the melodic and melancholic songs he manages to pull out of his sleeve, he turns âIf You Forgive Me, Iâll Just Do It Againâ into a pleasure for the ear, soul and heartâ
