Big Atomic was founded in 2000 by singer/songwriter Wes Yoakam. The group quickly gained momentum performing in front of thousands at Atlantaâs Music Midtown, 99Xâs Big Day Out, and the Atlantis Music Festival, as well as high profile performances at the Cotton Club, the 40 Watt Club, and the Georgia Theatre.

In 2001, Big Atomic released its first album, âFour Star Explosionâ, to rave reviews and much critical acclaim. Track three âBreatheâ, placed 5th out of 10,000 entries in NYCâs John Lennon Songwriting Contest, while other tracksâ A Postcard From the Edge of the Worldâ and âEvaporateâ were selected by Smithereenâs frontman and B.E.A.M. Chairman Pat DiNizio to earn a B.E.A.M. Grant for emerging artists. Three songs from the album were also featured in director Ben Taylorâs most recent feature film, âIn the Fleshâ that was accepted into film festivals in the U.S. and Germany and earned a national distribution deal. Even MTV has recognized the band: power rocker âWhen Sparks Flyâ was featured in the âMaking of the Videoâ program for Brittany Spearsâ âStrongerâ.

The most recent album release (Fall 05) âWrestling the Dragon and the Ratâ has sold almost 2,000 copies and is set for itâs second pressing. Wes has also been contributing bluegrass material for a Georgia film project, instrumental music for 3-D animation âJambalayaâ, and writing and recording a new solo Ep due out this Fall.
