Finding their roots in early 2003 and consisting of a two-piece band, Colour Cold introduced themselves as South Africaâs latest progressive rock band. Elizabeth Tsikkos and Dirk Hanekom may have only started writing and performing rock music together fours years ago, but in reality their foundation in the performance and music arts started many years before. Elizabeth Tsikkos has been a performer and dancer since the age of 7, and naturally, her fine ear for music and enormous talent for live performances molded her into the guitarist and songwriter that she is today. Dirk Hanekomâs first interest in school revolved around writing and before he discovered his talent in music, becoming an author was his dream, an obvious step for somebody who comes from a family of talented writers and authors. As time progressed, Dirkâs genuine talent for music lyrics became known not only to Colour Cold, but also to the South African music context. His lyrics can be heard in the song âHoogliedâ, which won the runner-up position at the ATKV Cresendo in 2005 as well as the popular Afrikaans cabaret, âHartseer in Hoopstraatâ. Today the band consists of four members, the additional performers being Tiaan Kussman who finds his place behind the drums and "Groot" Dirk Rupping, the bands bassist. Their love for live performances provides the band with a stage presence like none other and their passion and commitment toward their music can be heard and felt in each song, each lyric, and each and every performance. Originally Colour Cold gave a very theatrically set performance. Tiaan Kussman was always seen wearing a set of wings on stage and each member had their own unique name. Although the fans loved this and were starting to recognize and associate the band in this light, Colour Cold found that it was time to grow, mature and change the image of their live performances in order to match with their more established music and lyrics, and as expected, this change was received well by all. MySpace music helped Colour Coldâs recordings to be heard worldwide and as a result, Colour Cold have been contacted from various radio stations across the globe. The band have had airplay in Greece, Germany and California, all responding in a positive manner. Elizabeth has also written columns for Nextbigthing which is a German-based company allowing persons to download various music, interviews etc⦠to their ipodâs. Colour Cold were one of the most downloaded bands with their song âWho Knowsâ and climbed their music chart to number one. They also were a part of a project with New York based band Gee Davey where they compared the cultural differences of the music industry in South Africa with that of the States, all these podcasts can be downloaded from the site, www.nextbigthing.libsyn.com.
