Details:
H. Pylori, the New York based band was formed on or around summer 2000 under the name "Brain Damage".
It began as a whim: A couple of dudes, getting together to jam some Pink Floyd tunes for the fun of it. Eventually, the group split, but the enthusiasm for creating new and interesting music remained for bassist John Kilgour.
John began to work on some original solo ideas, under the name "Mr. Sparkles". As summer 2001 rolled around, John was finishing his first full-length CD solo effort, "As Seen On TV", when Kip Sang, NY-based drummer and drum-programmer stepped in to help John put together the sensational cover of Roxy Music's "In Every Dreamhome A Heartache", Bryan Ferry's 1972 ode to an inflatable doll. The song proved to be such a powerhouse, the CD release was delayed in order to include the track. Then, September 2001 rolled around, and the United States found itself in a state of panic and chaos, everything was put on hold. Being NY based, John felt the tragedy of 9/11 up-close and personal. "I will never forget." recalls John, "I was in a state of shock for about 3 months..." Out of that came the song "There's A Place", a personal journey through some of the thoughts and ideas John was experiencing at the time. The line "There's a place in New York City, that used to stand tall..." was penned on September 13, 2001.
"Mr. Sparkles' As Seen On TV" never witnessed an official release, negating itself to a burned CD handed out amongst friends and family. The horror of 9/11, coupled with the pleasure of his first child being born in January 2002 contributed to John re-focusing on his life and the full-time job film editing and fatherhood.
"Mr. Sparkles" would re-surface years later in 2007 as "H. Pylori". The band name was generated from an event Johns brother-in-law had. "Harry caught this awful stomach virus called H. Pylori from his daughter's pet turtle," John states, "and we thought it would be a perfect name."
Armed with six years worth of tunes and an acoustic guitar, John presented his work to his long-time collaborator Kip Sang. In February, 2007, they began work on what was to become "Destroy All Planets". "It's a real hybrid," says John, "I was inspired by my favorite bands: Pink Floyd, Roxy Music, The Cure, The Flaming Lips and Black Box Recorder. I mean, a real mix of stuff I hope the people will like."
All it took was 12 months, and lots of work. Helming the producer role of the CD, John took on the task of composing a ten-song compilation with Kip. As the album started to come together, there were just a few more obstacles ahead: "I played all the parts," says John, "bass, electric guitar and piano. They were just place-holders at first, with idea of bringing some bodies into the talent-pool of this thing. As the songs went on, I got used to the scratch-tracks, and decided to keep 'em. Kip was cool with it."
As John penned 9 new songs for the CD, one older song would find a home on the disc. "There's a Place", originally written in 2001, would be re-recorded and placed as the 2nd track of "H. Pylori - Destroy All Planets"
"Destroy All Planets" will definitely find a place amongst some of the most ground-breaking music of the 21st century. "It's been a long journey," John says, "and I hope it never ends."
People who are interested in Pink Floyd Roger Waters Roxy Music should consider this download.
