The Lions have gone through a few stages in their short lifetime. Originally, Chris and Darren met through an add in FFWD magazine in 2003. Their bond was instant when they discovered they both grew up in Dundee, Scotland. They couldnât believe the irony of growing up in the same town and moving to Canada to meet ten years later in Calgary. So we have guitar and vocals covered, but two people were still missing. Chris suggested his sister Liz play drums, while Darren joked âgirls canât play drumsâ⦠Liz disagreed. The band put an add in FFWD for a bass player and found John, who had actually seen The Lions play as a three-piece and wanted to join immediately. With Chrisâ songwriting abilities and the bandâs talents they got regular gigs and started to make a name for themselves in Calgary. Shortly after that, Darren left the band for personal reasons and Chris, Liz and John continued playing shows. Since Darren was the singer, Chris was left to take on the challenge until they found a new one. This of course never happened and Chris continued to sing from 2004 to 2005 when they released their self titled EP. After playing shows every week, by the end of 2005 The Lions were worn out and called it quits. John went on to play in a band called Secret Broadcast, Liz gave up drums completely, and Chris took a break from guitar until early 2007. Chris and Darren remained good friends through the years, and in March 2007 Darren, Chris and Liz decided to give The Lions another go. But someone's missing again. Alex, who works with Chris, plays bass and was a great fit and picked up all the songs quickly. The Lions are again complete and this time stronger than ever. They recorded their first full album towards the end of 2007 and released 'Sounds Familiar' in January 2008. With over 40 original songs there's never a dull moment at The Lions shows, so be sure to check them out live for a taste of what's to come on the next albums.
