"MAALA-ALA MO KAYA?-MAR"
A COLLECTION OF PHILIPPINES' MOST CHERISHED LOVE SONGS
MAR DUREZAâs captivating songs in the native Filipino dialects and his interpretation of popular Philippine âkundimansâ (love songs) can be best described as soft, melodious, and at times, sensual.
Via Times columnist and very active community leader, Norma Manankil, once wrote, âThere is a feeling of instant romantic mood when you listen to MARâs collection of nostalgic âkundimans...â VIA Times Publisher &
Executive Producer of Chicago Philippine Reports TV (CPRTV), Veronica Leighton, says, âYou forget all the cares of the world when you hear Mar
sing the songs you havenât heard for so long and part of your bygone days...what a nostalgia!â
Marâs newly-released CD, âMAALAALA MO KAYA? - MARâ includes some of the Philippinesâ cherished love songs such as âDahil sa âyoâ,âIkawâ,âBuhatâ,âDahil Sa Isang Bulaklakâ,âSapagkat Kami Ay Tao lamang","Kapantay Ay
Langitâ,"Lahat Ng Arawâ,"Saan Ka Man Naroroonâ,"Gaano
Ko Ikaw Kamahalâ and a sampling of Visayan sensibilities expressed in âMatudnilaâ and âAy Kalisud.â
Arranged and conducted by Warren Kime, considered to be one of the best trumpet players in the music industry, background tracks by an all-American band display jazz influence at least in some of the songs. He practically made the songs his own, producing a new brand of Filipino music of popular âkundimansâ with a touch of jazz in it.
As MAR DUREZA came to be Kimeâs favorite singer, a beautiful friendship and teamwork developed between the two musicians. Together, they would perform in concerts, weddings, ballroom dances, and all kinds of social
functions all over Chicagoland, Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan, Missouri,Florida and Canada for some time.
âMAR is one of the Philippinesâ greatest singers,â says Warren Kime. âHe possesses versatility, magnificent voice, wonderful vocal control, and phrasing, a three octave
range⦠he is actually comparable to the great Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett.â
Young Mar Dureza, a.k.a. Nelson Doreza, started his career in the music world as an undefeated champion for twelve (12) consecutive weeks in the nationwide contest of âTawag ng Tanghalanâ for amateur singers. This was followed by his performing engagements in the renowned clubs and hotel
lounges in Manila and Makati, and on the Pines and Hyatt Terraces Plaza Hotels in Baguio City.
He developed an international repertoire of songs when he toured the Far East for more than three years. In Fokuoka, Japan, MAR would be heard warbling Japanesenative âIngcasâ and other popular tunes of the time. Coming home to Manila, MAR introduced the revolutionary âKaraokeâ
singing for the first time, as he performed in places like âNone Suchâ,âAstral Villaâ,âand the âManila Garden Hotelâ in Makati.
Migrating to the United States, MARâs impressive singing resume and stage presence instantly appealed to the management of The Abbey Springs Country Club of Fontana, Wisconsin and the Harbor fringes of the Lake Geneva hostelry.
Following his Wisconsin stint, Chicago and its suburbs became the professional home base of the unforgettable MAR DUREZA where he became a regular performer as singer-guitarist at places like âChalet of
Northbrookâ,"Billyâs of Lincolnwoodâ,âDi Santisâ,âChi
Linnâ and âWishing Wellâ among many others.
His many fans in Chicago labeled him, âChicagoâs Gentleman of Songs.â He also appeared and starred in some successful concerts, to name a few,âA Winter Breakawayâ,âAn Evening Of Music With The Starsâ,âThe Evening Afterâ,âFor Friends Onlyâ and âMar Dureza In Concert With Warren Kime
And His Orchestra.â
When MAR DUREZA moved to Florida for a semi-retirement life, he still managed to perform at the revolving restaurant the âSpinnerâ of The Holiday Inn in St. Pete Beach for three years.
âMAALA-ALA MO KAYA? - MARâ is a collectible item of nostalgic songs... a âmust-ownâ collection for every Filipino family or a memorable gift for your loved ones because of its uniquely romantic quality. Special
features include background tracks of all twelve songs complete with lyrics that would allow karaoke enthusiasts to learn and enjoy singing along to the Philippinesâ familiar songs of yesteryears. You can actually sing them your way or style, or you may sing them simply ala
MAR DUREZA. Suit yourself.
