Details:
Petro Pashkov is famous and strong figure of Ukrainian jazz.
He was born in 1956, during a time when interest in jazz was one of the many dangerous interests to hold in the Soviet Union. He appeared in the underground jazz circles in Kiev in 1975 while still a student at the Kiev State Conservatory. There Peter studied with Professor D. Veintraub, whose pedagogical genealogy is rooted in Franz Listâs school.
Peterâs accomplishments since that first appearance are quite impressive. In 1988, he released the first Ukrainian jazz-rock LP entitled "This is not HMR". He was the first Ukrainian on the international jazz scene, presenting "JazzRockJamboree" (Budapest 1991) with the legendary Frank Zappa, and he performed at the first jazz-music restaurant "Studio" in Kiev in 1993. The opening of the âKiev Jazz Philharmonicâ began with P. Pashkovâs âJazz Vuiko Bandâ, and his was the first jazz composition dedicated to the Chernobyl disaster: âChernobyl Symphonyâ was presented in Athens, Greece in 1996. Among his other accomplishments are jazz hits arrangements and own compositions for piano and combo, and teaching jazz piano at the Kiev Glier High Music College. âPiotr Pashkov Pop Jazz Groupâ,âCoJâ, and âJazz Vuiko Bandâ were among the most popular jazz projects on the Ukraine musical scene, including what the critics describe as Pashkovâs âbrilliant, vibrant, fresh project, âThe New Trioâ. Well-known Russian jazz observer Vladimir Fairtag wrote about The "Jazz Vuiko Band" and P.Pashkov : "astonishing composition mastery, somewhat ironic reflection of the traditional music material. There are vigor, deep thinking without any problem dealing with instrumentation".
He and his colleagues performed at concerts and took part in numerous jazz festivals in the Soviet and post-Soviet space. Six different programs were recorded for the Ukrainian TV program â35 Minutes of Jazzâ, and Pashkov played seven times in very popular concerts in Kiev called âAlex Kogan presentsâ. A successful Japan tour in 2000-2001 led to Japanese festivals âKobe Jazz Streetâ, âOne World Festivalâ and the recording of the CD âJive Revue Live In Japanâ on the local âPal Pit Recordsâ. Pashkovâs wide field of activity also includes working in the studio as a composer and piano/keyboard player, cooperation with pop singers, and working on cruise liners âHapag Lloydâ (Germany) and âOceania Cruisesâ (USA).
In the early 1990s he began to experiment with electronic jazz. The results were âChernobyl Symphony & Ukrainian projectâ (1998), âAve Mariaâ in Peter Pashkovâs Christmas Projectâ (2001), âÐÑи fuckinâ девâÑноÑÑÑâ/âThis fuckinâ90sâ(2005) http://uajazz.com/audio/0054/index.shtml, âUntil You Playâ (2006), and âЦеÑковнÑе мÑÑи и джиÑадâ/âChurch Mice and Jihadâ (2007) http://uajazz.com/audio/0082/. 2003 at last saw the issuing of live in studio âJazz Vuiko Bandâ vol.1â¦â http://uajazz.com/audio/0024/index.shtml -- this studio record waited 10 years to come out!

The musicians of the âD&NOConnectionâ began their work together in the 1970s: Pashkov began to play with drummer Khmeliov while both were students at the Kiev Tchaikovsky State Conservatory; in the 1980s, trumpet player Kopotâ came to the Kiev Variety Theatre; and in the 1990s fate united them with Igor Dyachenko/tenor sax and Felix Gershkovich/bass. The last few years saw them together until some of the group members left Ukraine.
In 2007 Kopotâ returned from Switzerland, whereas Pashkov finished his contract with the cruise liners, and now these five talented musicians are planning to play together for a long time to come.

Leonid Goldstein (TV producer):
According to a number of jazz specialists, Piotr Pashkov â pianist, composer, music arranger, teacher â is one of the best musicians in Kiev. In his art one senses the philosophy of a Bill Evans, the lyrics of a George Shearing, the expressivity of a Keith Jarrett, and, more important, his own manner, his own performance style, such that the first sounds tell you â this is Piotr Pashkov, a musician with a terrific sense of time and balance.
Alex Kogan (jazz journalist, radio producer):
The manner and style of this musician usefully combine the wisdom of experience with youthful passion, and uninhibited imagination with cold logic. His hands are never ahead of his thought, and his musical taste is faultless. Even if one were to discount the multitude of ratings of jazz musicians, even if one were to treat them as no more than an adultâs pastime, Piotr Pashkov would still emerge as undoubtedly the finest pianist, arranger, and composer in Ukraine.
Vladimir Simonenko (author of The Ukrainian Jazz Encyclopedia):
In contrast to most musicians, who prefer traditional forms of jazz, Piotr Pashkov is attracted by its experimental side. Like jazz itself, Pashkov as a performer is always in search of fresh ideas, expressive techniques that go beyond the ordinary, timbre combinations as yet untried. The same applies to his work as a composer. Pashkovâs compositions are characterized by a well-defined melodical line and a well-developed sense of harmony, all in concert with a rich musical imagination and a perfect command of form. All of this contributes to the originality of this talented artist and makes Pashkov one of the greatest musicians in Ukrainian jazz.
Anton Jozhik Lejba (Hedgehog Publisher: Lemma):
âLet me mention⦠Petro Pashkov â one of the most interesting Ukrainian pianists, the living legend of our jazz.â
