First Citizen currently resides in Oxford, Ohio. Formed in the summer of 2003, the band consists of Simon Johnson (lead guitar, vocals, percussion, electronics), Daniel DeJohn (vocals, rhythm guitar, keyboards, percussion), Trevor Alder (bass guitar, vocals), and Michael DeJohn (drums, vocals). The band is a hybrid between two previous bands, one focusing on rock and jazz improv, the other focusing more on pop rock. While retaining both aspects, First Citizen focuses more on tighter song construction and experimenting with the traditional arrangement of the pop song.
The band members' influences range from pop to classic rock, from alternative to punk, from Latin jazz to electronica. Artists currently influencing First Citizen include the Beatles, Pink Floyd, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, White Stripes, Radiohead, Primus, Muse, Mars Volta, Outkast, Frank Zappa, Beach Boys, Medeski, Martin, and Wood, and Phish.
From these diverse influences, the eclectic modern rock of First Citizen emerges. These influences have created a blend of alternative rock with indie song construction. The majority of songs are radio friendly with respect to length. Live performances are always geared toward original material unless the event calls for covers. Depending on the venue, the band can choose from 40+ covers ranging from classic rock to modern pop. For a list of First Citizen cover material, please see attachment.
First Citizen currently finds the majority of its fan base in the 18-25 year age group. The band has repeatedly been successful drawing large crowds to its shows, and feels most comfortable in small to medium sized bars and nightclubs for two reasons. One, the club's size is more manageable to fill and, two, its size creates a more intimate atmosphere between band and crowd.
First Citizen is currently promoting its first self titled album, and expects to begin recording their second by June, 2005. The band is eager to play any available opportunities.
