An otherworld journey into the realms of Celtic, medieval, trance, supernatural and ancient music; Loreena McKennitt meets Dead Can Dance

9 MP3 Songs
WORLD: Celtic, ROCK: Celtic Rock

Details:
Primal, ethereal pagan rock combining Celtic and Indo-European music and ancient practices into a powerful psycho-acoustic experience.

A cauldron brimming with Gaelic lore, primal beats, powerful hypnotic landscapes, and Otherworldly chants and vocals.

A sensory journey between the worlds, opening shamanic pathways into the earth mysteries, ancient lore and the Underworld.

From curtains of sensuality, to walls of unearthly fire, the swirling tribal beats, lush sonics of wide-range fretless guitar, traditional woodwinds and percussion, and soaring Goddess vocals are a magnificent brew, pushing the limits of perception and ancestral memory - unforgettable pieces which transport and transform the listener.

Nine unique sonic journeys accompanied by a multi-colour full length booklet featuring the original paintings of internationally reknowned artist Cynthia von Buhler (whose work has been featured in the New Yorker, Newsweek and the Washington Post).

CD Reviews:

"A work of sheer brilliance... Many genres are explored on this CD blended seamlessly into a mix of gothic, ambient, rock and ethereal, all the while intimately linked to traditional Celtic and tribal elements... Guitarist extraordinaire Scott Dakota has woven ambient loops, tribal drums and Eastern riffs around Sharynne NicMhacha's haunting vocals." - Heathen Harvest

"The Moors get Otherworldy results... dark and mysterious beauty... Sharynne NicMhacha's vocals soar over a well-crafted backdrop of drones, guitar and percussion." -
The Boston Phoenix

"Dark, warm Celtic-influenced work, with passionate burning guitars by Scott Dakota, traditional instruments, and a voice that not only soars but uses phrasings beyond the realm of most singers - a voice right up there with Lisa Gerard of Dead Can Dance." - Pit Report

"The Moors put a rock spin on pagan mythology... the lyrics are printed in both English and ancient Druidic script, and sometimes even translated into Gaelic. Scott Dakota... uses an instrument he developed himself, the 'wide-range fretless guitar'... Sharynne NicMhacha sings and performs a long list of traditional instruments such as Tibetan wood flute and harp... All the detailed sonic loops, mesmerizing chants and carefully crafted drones are there for a reason." - The Boston Globe

"Scott Dakota and singer / woodwind player Sharynne NicMhacha orchestrate a blend of tribal percussion, Celtic and Middle Eastern melodies, microtonal guitar parts and ethereal vocals." - Guitar Player Magazine

"Sharynne NicMhacha's vocals have an eerie, unearthly edge which evokes the shadows of the Otherworld - Thanks to NicMhacha's passion and Scott Dakota's crystal-clear engineering, it succeeds as a powerful, prayerful invocation." - New Witch Magazine

"Ethereal and intoxicating... very mystical. Spells and invocations, possessed guitar improvs dance around an aural fire. Percussion loops carry you through foggy washes to secret places." - New England Performer

"An original song-writing coup goes to Sharynne of The Moors. This woman has a voice that could go head to head with Sinead, Enya or Sarah MacLachlan any day of the week. This music has garnered praise from writers to record lables and radio stations, and I can see why." - The Fine Print

"Metallized plainsong a la Steeleye Span, a trippy mantra worthy of late-period 13th floor Elevators, spooky Irish-balladry-cum-Gregorian chant - all leavened by Sharynne NicMhacha's eldrich wails. An ethnomusicologist's dream." The Noise Magazine

"Dark spiral web-like music spun itself over my consciousness... The Moors touched me with their musical imagination... They grab the tonal darkness and bright chords that range from 'Celtic metal' to hypnotic ballads... Lead vocalist Sharynne NicMhacha wailed, sung and released sounds from herself that were reminiscent of reels... This band is worthy of your following." - The Local

Artist Bios:

Sharynne MacLeod NicMhacha is a Celtic shaman-priestess, bard and scholar of Scottish, Irish and Welsh ancestry, a direct descendant of Uther Pendragon and of the Clan MacLeod, long recorded in ancient tradition to have connections with (and blood of) the Sidhe or Fairy Folk.

She has studied Celtic languages and mythology through Harvard University and has presented work at the University of Edinburgh (Scotland), University College Cork (Ireland), Smith College and the Harvard Graduate Study Group on Ancient Magic and Religion. Her original research on ancient Celtic myths and ritual have been published by Harvard University Press and the University of Edinburgh.

A Faculty Member of the Celtic Institute of North America, Sharynne has also taught at the Omega Institute, Kripalu Center and Rowe Conference Center. She plays numerous instruments (flute, Irish flute, pennywhistle, recorder, harp, bodran, dulcimer, keyboards and mandolin) and is the author of several books, including 'Queen of the Night' (Red Wheel / Weiser Press). Scott Dakota is a visionary musician and groundbreaking producer, a guitarist of extraordinary talent, a creator of sonic sculpture and an explorer into the uncharted realms of music and sound. He designs and constucts many of his own instruments, including the wide-range fretless guitar and the two-stringed fretless viol.

In addition to producing the award-winning Moors CD, Scott has many other production credits to his name, including Garvy (aka Josh Hager, formerly of The Elevator Drops) and the 'Goddess' single by Sophia Corbeau. He is also involved in the ambient project Hidreamwave, which utilizes brainwave technology and sacred geometry in musical experiments to alter consciousness utilizing the sacred acoustical properties of sound.

Scott has been interviewed by the Boston Globe, the Boston Phoenix and Guitar Player Magazine, among others, where he has shared his insights on primal approaches to modern music, the creation of his unique instrumentation and effects, and his microtonal approach to guitar playing (including the use of just intonation, overtones and Pythagorean principles).
