Details:
VU METERS'DARK CITY is at one time the end and the beginning of a path. A journey that springs from the encounter of three musicians: UGO VANTINI (DIVAE â BALLETTO DI BRONZO â TWIN DRAGONS â EZRA WINSTON), STEFANO PONTANI (ANAGRAMMA â EZRA WINSTON - MATILDA MOTHERS) and FABRIZIO SANTORO (NODO GORDIANO â OAK). They discover to share similar musical interests, at the point they soon join their efforts to give birth to a musical project, DARK CITY. At the time, nobody of them knew where this experiment could eventually take them, but two things were clear from the very start: they did not want absolutely to self-limit or censor themselves having regard to the music style, or even to the upcoming tracks structure. So, free improvisation had to play a great role. They started with recording countless hours of music in the studio, freely and wildly. They were quite satisfied about all that, as they were getting along well and definitely growing as a band, what came from the very long sessions; on the other side some technical imperfections and even mistakes of each of the three were highlighted. But from the speakers was now no more coming a raw sound, but a whole music texture, an exciting and fresh mix of one's lifetime experience as music listener, fan and player, a re-interpretation of classic songs, almost ready to be channeled in a precise direction to be fully enjoyable. They had either the choice, to rip the best part of any session to build brand new songs ready to be put on tape, with a clear and clean mood but perhaps lacking a bit of freshness and naturalness; or to fully maintain the original recordings with their well defined musical structure (but note that while in a jam session, a band IS actually composing), and maybe simply getting rid of errors and mistakes. After a while, they decided to experiment in a third way, leaving unaltered all the drums tracks and some remarkable lines of bass and guitar from their sessions, but adding new music portions and mixing solos and loops, all within the same song or maybe transferring them to another one. Eventually coming to something fully different. Live and studio songs at one, a re-interpretation of covers, contaminations from the ancient and new, in a communion of different times and spaces, halfway from the works of TEO MACERO, MILES DAVIS, FRANK ZAPPA's XENOCRONY. This is why I say that DARK CITY is the end as the beginning of a path, the end as testament of a deep, suffered and strange creativity, and the beginning: of a journey in the undefined universe of art. DR.
