Flashbulb Memories - As My Road Curves
Produced, recorded and mixed by Cory Plaugh
Reviewer -Shawn M. Haney
December 13, 2004

As My Road Curves is a mesmerizing effort for this young group of intuitive, creative musicians. The album opens with a dazzling instrumental, only to be superseded by "What You See is What You Get," a fierce barrage of guitars and percussion, accompanied by a fresh new voice from the frontman. The songs are full of texture and color, dynamics and introspective lyrics. The melodies are strong as well. The technique on lead guitars and percussion is sharp. Perhaps the one thing this group lacks is enough members to truly expand on their many ideas. It's hard to believe that the considerable force behind Flashbulb Memories is brought to you by the number two. Wow. You've got to give credit to both Cory Plaugh and Josh Latham for putting in countless hours tweaking each song, with each member working together on the recording, the mixing, the producing, and to top it all off, actually getting a satisfactory result. They have been rewarded for the efforts, and Plaugh is to be commended for his leadership. Just one look at the titles convinces the most skeptical of the unbridled creativity of this duo. Such song titles include "The Man in the Silver Suit," which seems like it's right out of a Jules Verne novel. "Legend in My Eyes" seems to convey Frodo's character of the "Lord of the Rings" book and film series. The "Earthy Jam" is quite natural and earthy in its message, and speaking of messages, the dark "Stages of Addiction" etches in pain a highway map of the suffocating struggles felt by addicts of all types. Listening further, the immediacy and impact of the music and lyrics only increases. More is likely to be heard from Flashbulb Memories in the near future. This album is a gripping effort. Flashbulb Memories - As My Road Curves

It's impossible to become bored while listening to this CD. Whether you like all the music depends on your taste but I have to give Flashbulb Memories some major credit for not being restrained by genre labels. This is a band that has no fear of exploring different sides of their music personality whether it's modern rock, thrash, nu-metal, alternative or Coldplayish acoustic pop-rock. This is definitely a band that fans of various styles of rock music should check out and major labels should get the balls to sign.

-THE KWEEVAK COMMUNITY
SPOTLIGHT ARTIST!

FLASHBULB MEMORIES - The band project from South Carolina's Cory Plaugh, a self-described perfectionist, whose attention to detail has paid off on his debut CD, As My Road Curves. At the age of eleven he made a vow to himself that he would make a "great" contribution to music and the world around him in one way or another. The music on this debut goes along way in achieving this goal and Flashbulb Memories make a lasting impression. Check out the sound clips on the band's website.

BIOGRAPHY

CORY PLAUGH:
At a young age I had established myself as one of the great dreamers of the world. As I grow older I find it harder and harder to hold on to all the dreams that I once had throughout my adolescence. In this ever-changing existence that is life it seems almost impossible to remain constant. At the age of eleven I made a vow to myself that I would make a "great" contribution to music and the world around me in one way or another, and I have been hanging on to that promise for over ten years now. Although I couldn't have it any other way, it has proven to be the hardest task I have ever chosen to endeavor. Through the years as an aspiring and yet struggling musician I have learned a thing or two about "the business." As a result, I have found that the old quote of yesterday, "If you want something done right you have to do it yourself," still rings true today. However, ironic as it may be when the enemies of the outside world are subdued there still brews the battle that lies inside one's self.

I received "the best class poet award" in the fifth grade, which helped inspire me to start taking my creative writing seriously. By the sixth grade I picked up the guitar and immediately delved into song crafting. I was in numerous bands and had written hundreds of songs throughout the youth and teenage years of my life. I began assisting and engineering at local recording studios at the age of seventeen. For years I learned through observation and personal experience, all the while building my own personal studio. I could fill pages with all the things I have witnessed in the music industry already, but I think I'll save most of those for the biography (Unabridged Version).

As My Road Curves... I believe this album is a competitor as one of the most historically difficult records to produce. To spare you from the many obstacles I had to overcome during this process, I'll keep it short and simple. All songs were written between 1999 and 2004. Several songs were cut and will be possible additions to later installments. The earliest recording on the album, "Legend in My Eyes," was written and performed when I was seventeen, and is the only music track not originally recorded in my bedroom. I later overlaid extra guitar tracks to widen its dynamic range and enrich its tone. The last track that was written and recorded was "The Man in the Silver Suit," which was in 2004. Prior to the production stages of this album, I got a one thousand dollar noise ordinance ticket, so the drum kit recordings were done in a separate studio. Then we imported the files into our studio program and mixed them accordingly. All instruments and performances, excluding the full drum kit performances, were recorded in my bedroom.

"I'm a perfectionist just trying to perfect my imperfections, and it's so hard because I feel so far from perfect." I put great pressure upon myself to create a contributive body of work of substance that I can be proud of. I already have the majority of the second album written, and I have started the recording of a few tracks.

I hope you enjoy my first release as well as many others to come. I am working hard on the second record as you read. Thanks for your support and interest.
