Free Mac Guinness Ceili Band -
Irish musician and singer Tony Fuller, born in Dublin in 1947 and now living in England for over 30years - and missing the Traditional Irish music scene -started singing and playing guitar in London's -"so called" - plastic Irish pubs and bars, until he met up with Banjo player the "infamous" Late and great Mick O'Connor - known for his late appearances at every gig - decided to form a duo and for want of a better name - there was so much in the national press at the time for - "Free the Guildford Four " and other great Irish people -like The Birmingham Six - "Free the Birmingham 6 " and so on - until a friend of Tony's asked his opinion on the Renault 5 - and Tony's reply was " FREE THEM ALSO " !! - a joke. (Renault 5 is a French car )
Some how the "Free Mac Guinness" name stuck as a joke -and a lot of people seeing the posters out side pubs -read it wrong and asked for THE FREE GUINNESS - only to be told -that's the Irish band -
Their first CD -"Exiles one and All"- was recorded 1998 for charity with Mick O'Connor and several other great Irish musicians -like Ross McManus and his 4 sons - father of "Elvis Costello" -Declan McManus , which raised over £25,000 for Cystic Fibrosis Trust.
The 2nd CD - still available - called "Free Mac Guinness" was recorded with the great flute and pipes teacher, Groetti Anglim from Tipperary and fiddle player Davey Collins from Cork. - list of tunes and songs like -"Raglan Road" -"Grace" -"Skibbereen" -"Fields of Athenry" to name a few, well worth listening to FREE from the web site - www.freemacguinness.com
This latest 3rd. CD - has produced a much more Traditional feeling with the likes of the excellent Fiddle player Joe O'Connor from Co. Tyrone , Tim Edey from Lunasa, on guitar and Melodeon ,plus Groetti Anglim, Ollie Blanchflower on Double bass, James Queally on Mandolin, banjo, plus guest singer Dubliner - "Uncle" Tommy Fuller singing Dermot O'Brien's famous song -"Dublin Town in 1962" , - and Jill & Malcolm Banks on flute ,tin whistle and guitar with their version of "The Lonesome Boatman"
Great songs and tunes with Jigs and Reels to take you back to the heart of true traditional Irish sessions, and songs like "Cavan Girl" to " I'll tell me Ma " - foot tapping songs & tunes to get you in the Irish party mood.
Check on the web site for tours and gigs, plus the availability of the group.
