The Brokenmusicbox began as a moniker for Kimberly Contrerasâs solo recording project. Though she did perform live on a few occasions, the name came to reflect her ever continuing battle with her home four track recorder and the ensuing collection of tapes (and tapes and more tapesâ¦). In 2003, Kimberly met fellow musician Tony Wentzel through work at The Annex Recording Studios and the two began sporadically playing and recording together, though both were still part of other projects/bands. In 2006, on a whim, the two began to collaborate with a keyboardist friend to further expand the sound of their home recordings. Unbeknownst to them at the time, these demos would soon become the foundation for âWaking the Soundâ â their debut album. Though all of the writing, arranging, and production was done by Tony and Kimberly, the album features contributions from an interesting list of notable friends and musicians: Drums - Jay Pellicci (31 knots), Rhodes/Organ- Jason Ruck (Film School), Bass- Kevin Hite (Idaho Falls), Piano- Jeff Hashfield (Pleasure Kills, Hi-Nobles), Lead guitar (Jim Wentzel).
