The Curvy Straights are the perfect combination of creativity, artistry, melody, and good old fashioned rock and roll. Theirs is the sound of the era: combining the clever word play of the best of 90âs indie rock with the grandeur of the classic 70âs giants. They are what the culture yearns for: Intelligent, passionate, socially-conscious musicians with a deep understanding of the nature of the world and their place in it, i.e., to rock the fuck out. Co-singer/songwriters Mike Monroe and Matt Lintzenich have been friends since high-school, and over the years their paths had diverged: Mike went off to college to study theatre; Matt got married and concentrated on his psychedelic/art rock/instrumental band Cosmic Grind. The years passed, Cosmic Grind broke up, 4 years of college turned into 7 (it was the shows that mattered, not the academics), and Mattâs marriage imploded. In the wake of all this the two friends reunited and began accompanying each others songs along with former Cosmic Grind bass player Chris OâShea. In those early days it was acoustic guitars and low key open mics, but eventually the necessity of rocking out took over and they invited seasoned veteran of the north jersey music scene, drummer Ian Albano (The Traveling Bubanas, 11:11, Velvet Toadstool), to come along, impressed by both his hard hitting creativity and unerring passion for music. These early days saw them move from open mics to local club venues and finally a benefit show for victims of Hurricane Katrina. Soon after this show their bass player, overburdened by work, family, and band responsibilities called it quits, leaving The Curvy Straights to an uncertain future. It wasnât long, however, before they were introduced to Bill Kelter, who had been impressed with the artistry of their single May, and who was rather quickly integrated into the band. Mr. Kelter, also a native of North Jersey, was a Berkeley graduate, and a seasoned veteran in his own right, having toured with D.C. funk-metal band, Lucy Brown, and been a foundational member of Elizabeth McCulloughâs New York based, Alpha Cat. Bill was a revelation as a bass player helping to mold what would eventually become The Curvy Straights sound, with his nimble fingers and sweeping technological tapestries. It was this era that introduced them to New York City and their triumphant debut at Arleneâs Grocery where they wowed the crowd with their visionary passion. Things were not quite right, though. There seemed to be an element missing: guitar artistry. Ed Roessler, formerly of Jesus Nixon, was exactly the artist necessary to fill in all the empty spaces. His hand-picked array of guitars and meticulously assembled collection of electronics and amps helped to further sculpt their developing sound. Now, fully assembled, The Curvy Straights are hitting the New York clubs, ready to spread the word: We are imminent!!
