Details:
We could see the mountain across the river, from the back windows of the porch. In the summertime my Mom would call me to come see the sunset."Come see come see-Come on honey-Come see how beautiful it is!"She'd exclaim. She was so intent that I see it.Eagerly I'd look out the window. It was beautiful. The reds and oranges from the setting sun filled the western horizon and we'd watch as the sun sank below it.She was so happy to see a thing of such wonder and beauty. And so was I.I think what made her even happier was that I saw it.That she had made it possible for me to see that beauty and wonder. She was happy to share that with me.And I was happy to be there with her. In fact in those moments you might say- we were happy together.
The mountain
was green in the summer and in the morning the the sun's eastern light would illuminate it revealing yet another of it's mysteries.Even as a kid I wasn't an "early bird" by any means. But the morning's peacefulness and quiet always appealed to me.There was something very special about it.
Sometimes there were thunderstorms during the summer. And great clouds of mist might descend upon the mountain and cover it completely. This happened only rarely. But when it did it fascinated me completely. In fact I had the secret hope that such an occurence would take place every time it rained. It didn't though. But when it did-I felt I had seen something truly wondrous and mysterious. It was as if God or heaven were coming down to earth.I can remember that happening one time and the rain was accompanied by tremendous claps of thunder. It shook the kitchen.I was afraid. But somehow I liked it too.It attracted me,even though, like I say,I knew it was dangerous and it frightened me.Still I wished it would happen again! There was something powerful, even terrible, yet majestic and glorious in that thunder and lightning.
In the autumn the leaves all turned color. And so it seemed the mountain itself was turning colors. But the beauty of the autumn leaves is a whole other story. And I'll tell you about that some time. But for now,I'll just say that in the winter you could see the snow on the mountain. There were no leaves on the trees. It was deathly stark. But there was something truthful in that nakedness that I found deeply gratifying.
One thing I should day about the mountain is- if you saw it you might say "that's not a mountain." and really it's not. It's more like- a foothill.Which is what it is.A foothill. But to me-when I looked at it-it was a mountain. In those quiet solitary moments when I'd look out the back porch windows and watch the seasons change-it was a mountain. And after a while I think I sensed something.I knew something without really knowing it.That there was something more to it all.More to the mountain.More to the seasons.More to me and my little world.More to all that was going on around us in the house. And that something or someone was-God.
In the springtime the mountain was so green. And the air was fresh and sweet. The sunlight played on the radiant blue sky and white fluffy clouds.
The Hudson Valley
See the sunrise over the Hudson Valley
And the river come flowing to the sea
Hear the birds nesting in the tree tops
Singing in the valley so green
They are singing the song of this valley
Of the blue sky the clouds and the trees
How the sun sets down over the Catskills
And blesses this valley so green
From way up their in the Adirondacks
From way up there in Lake Tear of the Clouds
From way up there in the Opalescent River
The waters come flowing on down
