Artist: Knox
CD: Music for Pleasure
Home: Seattle, Washington
Style: Poppabilly
Quote: "Knox may be the name of an unflavored gelatin, but it's now also the name of a musician of the highest order."
For my next act, ladies and gentlemen, I will not write a review but will, instead, send each and every one of you a copy of Music for Pleasure, an oh-so-welcome-and-refreshing example of truth in advertising.
Not to mention an example of exquisite songsmithing, production, musicianship ... hell, even the bloody album cover is cool.
When it comes to describing the sound one experiences upon pressing the "Play" button, suffice it to say that while lashings of rockabilly may ornament this record the real steam in the engine comes from astute and never-derivative nods to the unabashed joyous pop rock of Nick Lowe, Lennon & McCartney and Crowded House.
Like a box of chocolates, each of these songs is a confection and you don't give a good damn about what you're gonna get next -- you Just. Want. To. Eat.
And this isn't a case of great tune, bad lyrics. Knox isn't just singing the Ba-Cr volume of Encyclopedia Britannica to the tune of "Let it Be."
When you encounter lyrics such as:
I want to take your money
I want to take your money
I want to take your money and run ...
I'll grab your pocket book and take a look
I could take your comb and become a crook
or "When your thirst becomes a cry, I'll take the Big Dipper from the sky and fill it till the ocean's dry," you just have to nod your head and say, "Well done, sir."
Knox may be the name of an unflavored gelatin, but it's now also the name of a musician of the highest order, who creates a wonderfully complex assortment of people's pop music and who will, with any luck, be paying the rent by doing so for many years to come.
