Paper tigers, paul metsa's debut album was released to critical acclaim in 1984. Cmj magazine called metsa "one of the most poetic protest singers of our time. " the twin cities reader named it one of the top 10 releases of that year. The austin chronicle called it 'american street poetry-sounds like something special"

it features metsa's (like bob dylan, a native of minnesota's iron range) stunning wordplay in a variety of styles, backed by a who's who of minneapolis musicians including peter ostroushko, willie murphy, eddie berger, cats under the stars, prudence johnson, tim o'keefe, jack pasternacki, and tom lieberman, among others. It features 8 of the songs on the original lp with two bonus tracks: 59 coal mines which the boston rock said "recalls woody guthrie and is destined to become an american classic" and a solo acoustic version of virginia (also featured in its original version here with a full band featuring al oikari,later to become the keyboardist for the twin cities jam band the big wu. )

since the release of paper tigers, metsa has gone on to win 7 mn music awards,most recently americana artist of the year at the 2005 mn music awards. He has played over 6,000 professional gigs, and has toured both iceland and siberia, both without international incident. He was a featured performer at farm aid v at the request of willie nelson, and a featured performer at the tribute to woody guthrie at the rock and roll hall of fame at the request of nora guthrie.
