Details:
Nan Raphael is currently active as a clinician, guest soloist nationwide and recording artist with the Washington Winds. Nan was solo piccoloist with the U.S. Army Field Band from 1979 to 2003 and was a featured soloist with the Band on several major tours in the U.S. and abroad. Nan has been a member of the Prevailing Winds, a quintet whose credentials include performances at the Kennedy Center, The Smithsonian Resident Associates, numerous radioshows and other concerts around the Greater Washington, DC region. Ms. Raphael has also performed numerous solo recitals on flute and piccolo around Washington, DC as well as having subbed for the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra. She has a strong interest in promoting the piccolo as a solo instrument, resulting in the establishment of Duo 8VA and the publishing of several articles for Flute Talk Magazine, the Washington Flute Society Newsletter and Band World Magazine as well as a book of piccolo solos and technical passages from the symphonic band repertoire. In 1991 and 1998, Ms. Raphael was a participant in the Professional Flute Choir for the National Flute Conventions in Washington, DC and Phoenix, AZ. She was also a winner of the Convention Performerâs Competition for the NFAâs 1998 convention on Phoenix, AZ. Ms Raphael has been an adjudicator for the Friday Morning Music Club Young Artist Competition, Newly Published Music and Piccolo Artists Competitions for the National Flute Association. In 2000, while serving as program chair for the MId-Atlantic Flute Fair, she initiated a piccolo artists competition to be held every three years. She has served on the Board of Directors for the Washington Flute Society and the Piccolo Committee for the National Flute Association. In August 2002, Ms. Raphael premiered a solo written specially for the US Army Field Bandâs appearance at the National Flute Convention in Washington, DC and in 2003, released her first CD of music for piccolo and piano titled âShort and Sweetâ. Her second solo CD Hands Across the Seas was released in November of 2007.
Nancy Mulholland, piccoloist and flutist with the Maryland Symphony for 22 seasons, has also played with the Wichita Symphony, and Meadowbrook Festival Orchestra. A private teacher for 40 years, she started the Gaithersburg Flute Camp in 1993 to bring flute ensemble playing to young flutists. She is a member of Flutes on the Brink flute choir; and was recently piccolo guest soloist with the Newton Mid Kansas Symphony, the Peabody, KS summer park band, and in piccolo duo at the Kennedy Center Millennium Stage. She holds performance degrees from Wichita State University and Shenandoah University Conservatory, and teachers include Jerry Felmlee, Edward Callan, Albert Tipton, and Frances Lapp Averitt.
