What is Roots Rock?

Roots Rock is Folk Rock. Folk Rock is lyrics oriented with drums (or percussion), bass, guitars, keys, fiddle, mandolin, whatever fits the essence of the song as defined by the producer. Electric guitars usually make a tune sound more rock-and-roll whereas the fiddle and mandolin tend to add a country twist. Midnite Afternoon encompasses both. The band - collectively known as The Rools - performs well above and beyond the mediocre. Ron Flynt (20/20 / Ron Flynt & The Blue Hearts) has been described by the Austin Chronicle as one of the top sidemen in Austin, and every music enthusiast is aware of the city's reputation as a breeding ground for the world's best rock talent. John Bush (Edie Brickell & New Bohemians / Foamy), who plays both drums and percussion on Midnite Afternoon, has been executing the latter since the mid-80s with the New Bohemians, a Texas jam band made famous for their 1988 hit "What I Am" with singer-songwriter Edie Brickell. Gracing the electric guitar on Midnite Afternoon is Scrappy Jud Newcomb, one of the hardest working professionals and most beloved guitarists on the Austin music scene. Warren Hood started playing violin in Austin at the age of 11 and utilizes both the fiddle and mandolin on Midnite Afternoon. He has shared the stage with Lyle Lovett, Robert Earl Keen, Little Feat and many more. Larry Tracy does a fabulous job on pedal steel guitar with a style similar to that of Jerry Garcia. Another veteran of the Austin scene, Penny Jo Pullus (who is reminiscent of Emmylou Harris in her earlier days) lends her sultry vocals to round out the sound of the band. Canadian songwriter Andrew Reid is the deeply prolific soul fronting this terrific album.
