BLUES: Acoustic Blues, BLUES: Delta Style
Details:
South Bound Freight Train is the first CD for the Biscuit Rollers. The band started in 2005 in hope of finding the right combination of musicians that really cared about preserving the old time blues feeling of people like Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters and Cephas and Wiggins. The band is headed by vocalist and percussionist Kelly Miller who brings that deep Mississippi blues voice that we love to hear in those old records of yesterday. Scotty Grey is the spark of the band and plays a variety of musical instruments including guitar and foot drums but is a master at old piedmont blues harp with a bit of Sonny Terry and Sugar Blue mixed in. Jack Roy is the guitarist of the band, while throwing in some harp and banjo just to keep things lively.
We hope you like the CD as much as we enjoyed making it. These songs were our favorites to perform over the last 3 years and wanted to share them with our fans and friends. Here are a couple of reviews of the CD from Professah Blues, NPR Blues Valley and Dom Turner of the Backsliders and Supro, International Blues Manâ¦
âIf you like acoustic country blues, you will like South-Bound Freight Train by the Biscuit Rollers. This groupâs initial effort reflects the successful results of music selection, skilled instrumental work, and an excellent balancing of vocals and instrumentation, which includes guitar, banjo, harp and an occasional tambourine.
The 15 tracks run the gamut from slow to upbeat tunes, including an interesting interpretation of Eddie âSonâ Houseâs Preachinâ the Blues. There are tracks that are new to me, like Having a Real Bad, that reflect lyrics dyed in the deep delta. There are also familiar tracks that are well done: 32-20, Kokomo, and I Canât Be Satisfied. A unique touch the release offers is the inclusion of several brief tracks (30-40 seconds) allowing for solo performances.
The Biscuit Rollers have put together a solid release built around strong vocals backed by skilled musicians. This trip to the country is one worth taking, whether youâre walking, driving, or taking a freight train.â

âThe Biscuit Rollers âSouthbound Freight Trainâ is a prime example of modern musicians approaching blues with reverence and respect, and producing an album of blues with both a traditional feel and production style, but with a modern touch and sensibility. âSouthbound Freight Trainâ is an album of songs to listen to as a whole, as each song takes you on a sonic journey. âDeltaâ meets âPiedmontâ blues finger-picking style is a delight.â
