Details:
Walking into a venue for a Garrin Benfield Band show is a lot like hopping a freight train as it traverses the landscape of the American countryside. Benfield's diverse influences bubble to the surface like Texas crude: Lightning fast flat-picking lands the listener smack-dab in northern Kentucky, while soulful howling and smoldering guitar string-bends owe more to the Southern Delta. Along the way are hints of Harlem Jazz, the folky songwriting style of the Rocky Mountains, and more than a liberal dose of the aggressive psychedelia that put San Francisco on the musical map.
Zacksongs Music is proud to present our first Live CD. August Live is a compilation of 11 tracks that were recorded live in the summer of 2003 while Garrin Benfield Band was on tour opening for guitar legend Boz Scaggs!
The songs are arranged in the order that the sets were most often performed. Though GBB sets have a different set-list every night, we attempted to recreate the feel of a typical show. On this disc you will find powerful jams on songs like "Another Hour to Kill," "Hungry Ghost" and others, along with the plaintive balladry found on songs like "Ugly" and "Light The Way." We didn't leave out that lightening fast picking either. You'll hear plenty of Garrin's heart-stopping dexterity on the never before released "I Let You Go" and the gospel-ish favorite, "Children Go Where I send Thee!"
The Summer Tour in 03 consisted of shows at the House of Blues in Las Vegas, NV, the Anselmo Valencia Amptheatre in Tuscon, AZ, the Dodge Theatre in Phoenix, AZ, the Mountain Winery Ampitheatre in Saratoga, CA, Avila Beach Ampitheatre in Avila Beach, CA, Humphrey's BY the Bay in San Diego, CA and Knockti Harbor Ampitheatre in Clear Lake CA.
Benfield and his band have found a comfortable home here by bringing their ethereal brand of Americana to clubs and theatres all over California. GBB sets are often divided between solo ventures involving just Garrin's voice and guitar, driving electronic loops, and it is not uncommon to hear every member of Benfield's ensemble suddenly becoming one half of a duo, a third of a trio, or a soloist in their own right. In addition to Benfield, GBB is Russ Gold banging away at the gongs, Upright and Electric Bassist Joshua Zucker, and pianist/producer Michael Rodriguez.
