Details:
Rob Robinson is a soft-spoken Southern gentleman from Mississippi, but if you listen to the lyrics on the 6 CDâs he has written and produced, you quickly realize he has a lot to say. The listener is immediately drawn to the nuance and craft of his lyrics as well as the sonic integrity of his studio production. Rob Robinson and the Dixie UnderRunnersâ CD, âWhen Pigs Flyâ is full up with the earthy Rhythm Oil that only comes from Mississippi Mud.
The jump country blues of âCane Pole Fishingâ opens the CD with a humorous romp about a boy obsessed with fishing. Robâs unique slide guitar style shines on this and the following title track âWhen Pigs Flyâ. âWhen Pigs Flyâ is born from a funky backward country optimism that Dwight Yoakum would love. Track #3 âThatâs Just Like Youâ has a country beatlesque melody that always demands another listen.
Rob is an award-winning producer. He also recently wrote and produced âThe Side Effects of Dyingâ with Pam Reynolds for Bill Lowery Music, Southern Tracks and NDE Records (released Oct. 2005). Bill Lowery Music has licensed music from the CD to HBO, NationalGeographic, BBC and The Discovery Channel and three songs from the CD have already been recorded by other artists.
Rob mastered the âWhen Pigs Flyâ CD to lacquer on a lathe with Randy Kling. Tracks 4 - 7 sound like they were written on a greasy brown paper sack. âBrett Jones and I wrote âDelta Dog Radio (WFIDO)â about a blue tick hound I had that swallowed my transistor radio. He might pick up a country station or he might pick up a blues station depending on which way he was standing when he hiked his leg, âHaints on the Hillâ is a classic blues tune reminiscent of the spirit of the late great R.L. Burnside. âA haint is a specter or ghost. My uncle Red used to warn us about the âhaintsâ in an old haunted house when I was a kid. The truth was they had a still up there and wanted us kids to stay away.â Track # 6 âDelovely Deloresâ has a groove Robert Randolph & The Family Band would call âCousinâ. âDancing To The Radioâ slows things down with a sensual number that will make you want to grab hold of the one you love.
Robâs musical journey began when he was an underage cook at Enochâs A Caféâ in Monroe, Louisiana. âI wanted to hear all the Delta Blues acts coming through town. Because I was under age, the only place they would let me work was in the kitchen which, fortunately for me, was next to the mixing console.â
#8 âMean Old Dinosaurâ will be the childrenâs favorite. The song explains that dinosaurâs have been âmisrepresented by hustlers and scientists trying to make a buck.â âBrandedâ, track #9, is about the permanent scars left by love.
Tracks #10 and 11 are very different from the rest of the CD. âGood things happen, donât they?â is a ride to Seattle on a Horse Carousel. âHead to Holdâ is a twisted rock number with a progression a la Kurt Cobain and a bridge straight out of the David Gilmour handbook.
The Black Eye CD Rob wrote and produced for Whirlybird won a âBest Recording Awardâ from The RMS Music Society and charted on college and Adult Contemporary Radio. Rob wrote and produced 3 CDâs and played over 500 shows with Fearless Freap, âOne of Nashvilleâs Best Bandâsâ, according to The Nashville Banner. Rob has written, sung and produced demos, CDâs for other artists and commercial music, including national jingles for Ford Motor Company.
Rob recently directed publicity for the 2006 CCMA Band of the Year, The Road Hammers. He has also worked with Tim McGraw, Joe Diffie, and Collin Raye.
Rob grew up in Louisiana and Mississippi and sites a melting pot of musical influences such as R.L. Burnside, Robert Johnson, Willie Nelson, Dr. John, Jimmy Rogers, The Reverend Gary Davis, Bob Dylan, and his sister Melinda, a classical pianist. His musical style is an earthy mix of rock, blues, Dixieland and country.
