Details:
Australian Guitarist Gary Norman is now a freelance Melbourne based musician with more than 25 years experience working in all areas of the television, theatre, corporate, concert and recording industries. Gary first toured Australia 1975 on the showband circuit, after which he went overseas to have private lessons with ECM recording artists John Abercrombie , Bill Connors, and also the legendary Barry Galbraith.
He returned to Australia broke but inspired. During the several years of wood shedding and playing bebop that followed he did his first stage play in 1976 which was A Chorus Line, followed by The Wiz, Canterbury Tales , Man of La Mancha, They're Playing Our Song, Dancin' Man, Bee Hive, Song and Dance, Starlight Express, History Of Australia ,West Side Story, Les Miserables, Singing in the Rain and most recently Mama Mia.
He moved to Sydney in 1979 and found himself immediately working in the clubs and on national tours with international artists such as Shirley Bassey and Peter Allen . The Royal Command Performance at the Opera House in 1980 was special, but the highlight for him was a duo with an inspirational guitarist Jim Kelly. They had a regular gig at a bar called Mama Maria's in the Cross which saw many fine players sit in, including John Scofield and Joe Pass.
On returning to Melbourne in 1981 he played with a kaleidoscope of cover bands while at the same time becoming involved with the television and recording industries. He now enjoys a variety of Orchestral,Ensemble and Solo work and has been teaching regularly since 1989. He currently performs with a Classical style quartet "The Raga Dolls", an eight piece swing band "Mainstem", and the fusion trio "Triangle" which released its debut CD in Dec 2001. "Outside In" is his first Solo recording.
