CLASSICAL: Film Music, EASY LISTENING: Orchestral
Details:
Imagine you and your children are in a sleigh with two horses trotting in front, their harness bells jingling. The merriment and simple pleasure is captured in âChildrenâs Sleigh Ride.â
Imagine you are riding a horse over the crest of a hill with only prairie grass and sky for company. âA Ride in the Windâ lets you feel the wind in your face and experience the excitement of the moving horse.
You are on board a small sailboat far enough away from shore that the sea swells and sinks, swells and sinks. The wind picks up and the sea becomes choppy, then a squall overtakes you, but soon passes and the sea is calm again âOn the High Seas.â
England is dotted with the ruins of Norman castles from the twelfth century. Standing in one of these, you look around at the small round stones and mortar that make up the crumbling walls, and you imagine the people sitting at a long table in a great hall and a small group of musicians on a balcony playing their medieval instruments.
Walking up a mountain always begins with a long hike across peaceful meadows and on up the wooded lower slopes. Eventually, you can see the end of the tree line and the rocky trail ahead. Vistas appear now and then between the trees. The excitement mounts the higher you climb until at last you walk out onto the top.
They can be desolate, damp, foggy and windy, but moors can also be sunny with skylarks throwing out their wild singing unseen above you. But ultimately, a tramp across a moor is a lonely and sad one.
Griegâs Piano Concerto always evokes images of fiords for me, wooded slopes plunging thousands of feet into the sea. This piece is the main theme and one of the supporting themes from the first movement.
Iraq is an evocation of a war that is everywhere and nowhere, of fear, of despair, of desolation. There is no hint of ethnic instruments, only the universal human sadness that always goes with war.
It is a relief to get to Venice and glide in a gondola along one of the narrow canals listening to the relaxing notes of one of the most popular concerti in the world. Vivaldiâs native city is still much the same as when he trod its labyrinthine walks and taught music to young girls. The second movement is here played without repeats and is orchestrated for modern orchestra. This music was used by Georges Delerue as the love theme for the movie "A Little Romance."
One of the dances that is characteristic of Greece begins very slow and gradually speeds up to a Dionysian ecstatic dance at the end.
Two of the most popular pieces in Bizetâs opera Carmen are the toreador march and the Bohemian dance. Excerpts from both are combined in this track.
The music of Hungary is distinctive in its abrupt shifts from slow to fast and fast to slow. In this piece, the best themes of Brahmsâ 4th and 5th Dances are combined.
NOTE: This is a Redbook-standard, commercial-format CD and will play on any device that plays CDs.
