The new Satch Kerans CD, âRiverboysâ, is here! Tom âSatchâ Kerans is a singer, songwriter and guitarist drawing on such influences as Graham Parker, Peter Case, Bob Dylan, and Barry and The Remains. The founder and front man of the Boston based band the Catalinas, he has opened shows for Little Steven Van Zandt, The Outlaws, NRBQ, Charlie Sexton and South Side Johnny and the Asbury Jukes. In fact, Kerans opened a show for Roy Orbison four days before the legendary singerâs untimely death. Though Kerans took a hiatus from recording throughout most of the 90âs, he has returned with a vengeance, and his output has been nothing short of prolific.

Kerans released his solo debut, âElliot St.â in April of 2005 to rave reviews. Phil Suggitt at Shindig Magazine wrote, âIn short, this is a little gemâ¦Keransâ sound is slightly reminiscent of the vagabond rock troubadour style of Willie Nile with elements of Petty and McGuinn- which is high praise not criticism.â Jeff May at the Noise cited ââ¦great songs and old-fashioned chops.â and Eric Sorensen at Fufkin.com declared simply, âLong may you run, Sir Satch!â. The title track, âElliot Streetâ was selected for NPRâs âAll Songs Considered-Open Micâ as well as the compilation âWicked Hawt Spectacularâ #6 also featuring Bronson Arroyo of the Boston Red Sox. In addition to the songs on âElliot Streetâ, Kerans contributed a new song, âDark Side of Dawnâ, to David Bashâs âInternational Pop Overthrow V.9â compilation. Demonstrating his versatility as a writer, the socially conscious âViva la Revolucion!â surfaced on a segment of Neal Youngâs website-âLiving With War Todayâ-devoted to songs protesting the war and or the current Bush administration.

Hearing a roots-rock sound for his next project, âRiverboysâ, Satch turned to Hi-N-Dry Studio in Cambridge, the studio founded by the legendary Mark Sandman of Morphine. Though Sandman passed away in 1999, the studio is manned by former band mates and friends including Billy Conway and Dana Colley. In addition to writing and singing the 10 tracks for the album, Kerans played guitar, Hammond organ and harmonica. North Shore music veterans Lenny Dunn and Kevin Levesque played drums and bass respectively. Kerans also enlisted the help of some prominent Boston musicians including Sal Baglio (guitar and vocals on âHarrison Avenueâ). Dana Colley (sax on âRiverboysâ) and Tom Janovitz (vocals on âBig Loveâ). Paul Q. Kolderie (Pixies, Morphine, Radiohead) handled the mixing at Camp St. Studio in Cambridge and it was mastered by Ian Kennedy at New Alliance. âRiverboysâ is slated for an early 2008 release. For those of you counting, thatâs 23 recorded and or released tracks in the space of 16 months. Meanwhile, Satch has twenty tracks on deck for his next project which will consist of his home demos. Kerans has opened shows for fellow roots rockers like Dennis Brennan and Dave Johnston. He performs with his band or solo at clubs in the Boston area including The Kirkland Café, Toad, The Lizard Lounge and the Abbey Lounge as well as Arleneâs Grocery and The Sidewalk Café in New York City.
