One of the most popular Tejano artists, Stefani Montiel combines old-world charm with contemporary production and pop sensibilities on TAKIN' ON THE WORLD. For example, "Todo Todo" begins rather traditionally with an accordion and Latin percussion. However, the song gradually falls into a hook-oriented pop ballad, replete with a strong backbeat and an infectious vocal refrain.
The title track best illustrates Tejano's nouveau sound, with Montiel mixing angular Latin rhythms and smooth R&B. "La Que Jugo" captures a more homespun version of Tejano, but it still maintains a strong nightclub pulse. The album closes with two selections sung in English. Entitled "Promises" and "Get'cha Groove On," these funky tracks fall into the contemporary R&B category, though the latter bears a distinctive techno leaning.
