Gordon Vincent grew up in the shadow of the oil refineries on the North Jersey coast. He started writing songs in high school, studied American fiction in college and honed his musical craft by thrashing it out in bars. What emerged was an artist of striking originality and depth, so steeped in tradition that he is utterly new. In recent years he has brought his "rock-and-roots" performances to CBGB's in New York, The Stone Pony in Asbury Park, and to Nashville venues like 12th & Porter, Windows on the Cumberland, and The Douglas Corner.
Gordon Vincent on stage. . .controlled abandon. 50's pool halls, big cars on lost highways. A runaway train with a destination. "The insolent calmness of his smile, the heavily-lashed eyes that just dare you to look away." Somehow churning out a groove and melodic hooks at the same time, he conjures a whole band on one guitar: "the guy has fingers on his fingers." The vocals are textured, edgy. His banter between songs will interest you strangely.
This guy is freakishly prolific. Come back from your massage and he'll have 3 new songs. His lyrics range from a heady torrent ("Get up on it now") to a gritty simplicity ("Nobody but myself to blame"). He can write about anything, from the naked empathy of "Feels like rain" to the hilarious send-up of shallow materialism that is "Too short to be a man". But all his songs reflect the insights of an honest soul journeying through a treacherous world. They are nothing less than up-to-the-minute bulletins from the trenches of our time - fresh, green shoots from the best seeds that rock, folk and R&B ever planted.
