REGGIE NICHOLSON PERCUSSION CONCEPT - Timbre Suite - Featuring Warren Smith, Don Eaton and Reggie Nicholson on drums, percussion, marimba, djembe and Salim Washington on woodwinds and percussion. This disc was recorded live at an AACM concert in October of 2007. Each of the six pieces is named after a color. "Purple" is first and begins quietly, adding one percussionist at a time. This music was superbly recorded by Jon Rosenberg who always does a great job. The percussionists get into a great, laid back groove while each member takes a short solo. "Green" features some bird calls blended well with the spacious congas and other percussion, sounding as if we are in an African village. The great saxophonist, Salim Washington, is featured on tenor on "Gold" and fits just right amongst the melodic percussion, especially along with Warren Smith's excellent marimba playing. Salim's flute is featured on "Blue" and again it blends perfectly with the percussion ensemble, which play with a more spacious and suspense-filled vibe. Salim sounds as if he playing oboe on "Brown" and the eastern-sounding melody is another highlight of this disc. This piece is especially lovely, exotic and hypnotic with a strong marimba solo by Warren Smith. The final piece is "Orange" and it is the most powerful and dramatic. I have a friend/customer that arrives here at DMG every Saturday at noon when we open. His name is Carl from Irvington and he is always looking for the same thing: good flute and percussion music.
