Snoring, is essentially noisy breathing' through the mouth or nose during sleep. During deep sleep, the muscles in our bodies relax. So when the muscles in our throat relaxes, it is normal for our airway to close partly. Air comes in and out of the lungs through this airway, but if both the nose and the throat are obstructed, snoring occurs.
Snoring occurs when there is a blockage of free air flow through the back of the mouth and nose. This area is collapsible - when the structures in this area of the breathing pathway strike each other and vibrate during breathing, snoring is the result.
Snoring can also be a sign of a medically serious problem called Obstructive Sleep Apnea. People who snore should be evaluated by a specialist. If a patient is not just a snorer but also has obstructive sleep apnea, this condition is more serious and may require more invasive procedures. Your doctor will discuss these with you.
Usually snoring does not only cause problems for the snorer, it causes problem for the sleep partner. The snorer often wakes up from the snoring or from trying to stop snoring. The sleep partner can have trouble sleeping because of the noise, or the anxiety about their partner's health and well-being. Lack of sleep can have many consequences through out the day such as lack of productivity, irritability and sleepiness.
Snoring is, more often than not, a very annoying and disturbing habit. Snoring is the act of breathing in and out through the open mouth in a manner that causes a vibration of the uvula and the soft palate. This vibration gives off a sound that may vary from a soft noise to a loud and unpleasant sound. Snoring is a habit that is most common during sleep and also occurs immediately after death. The basic cause of snoring is the presence of some kind of blockage in the breathing passage of a person. This blockage can be caused by many things like the tongue which usually falls into the throat when the person is in a lying position.
