Whatever the reason people lost out. 4. Wrong Career Path When the government gives out money for training, they don't just fund any program. They want to fund programs that a) are short term, up to 2 years maximum and b) have you ready to go to work in an "in demand" field when you're done. In addition, not every school is funded. You must attend a school whose tuition is in line with the guidelines of your state. Usually this means a state run institution like a community college or related institution. By having this restriction, laid off workers are sometimes protected from unscrupulous schools that are just commission driven scams that offer little benefit for their bloated costs. At other times, by sticking to government schools, the students receive less than adequate training in a particular field. The good news is that if you're planning to be a nurse, you can get the training you want to function as a confident professional in most instances! To fund only programs that are "in demand" actually ma kes sense. The idea is to get people back to work. But your idea of an "in demand" field and somebody else's may be different. Ask many teenagers what they want to be when they "grow up" and they all want to "design video games". Ask many retired male factory workers what they want to do, and it's "become a barber". The former wants to keep living in the fun of the moment and they enjoy playing video games 24/7. The latter remembers happy times chatting away in the barber shop and seeing the man with the clippers getting paid cash for a few minutes work. Both the teenager and retired factory worker are projecting scenes that are comforting to them but they may have little or no relationship to what's actually "in demand" in their area right now. Thankfully, because you're applying to be trained as a nurse, that is an "occupation" that is "in demand". However not ALL nursing training programs are funded. I'll tell you the type of programs which are and why. That's why if you're reading this manual to try to b ecome a nurse, you've got the right idea. Even though, as this is written, many jobs are laying off, there are still 200,000 nursing positions that hospitals want to fill! 5. Didn't Make The Most of It. And in the end, some just didn't seem to get their act together. They thought that because the government was giving away free training dollars that they a) would be automatically accepted into a program and b) they would not fail once accepted! BOTH ARE WRONG. If you want to be a nurse in particular, you are going to have to - Get started right away working to get into a qualified class - And keep working hard until you pass your nursing exam Don't worry though the results you'll attain in your chosen field of being a nurse will be WELL WORTH IT! Checklist for Getting Started: 1. If you want to be a nurse, seize this lay off opportunity to become a nurse! 2. As soon as you hear about a lay off or suspect one, find out about your benefits. 3. Don't let your emotions tell you it's ok to sit on the couch and eat chocolate bon bons for six months before you check into becoming a nurse. By then it's likely TOO LATE! 4. Don't confuse finding out about your benefits and getting approved for Free Training with the work required to GET in the class, STAY in the class, and PASS the state nursing exam. As far as getting free government training dollars to become a nurse when you're laid off, there are three FEDERAL sources of money that may be available to you. In additio n, there may also be money from STATE funds from their general budget and/or a state lottery that may go to work for you. The starting point for seeing what's available is simple. 1. If your training starts for the academic year 2009-2010, get your 2008 tax return and W-2's. 2. Go to this website: fafsa.ed.gov 3. With your tax return in front of you, fill out the F.A.F.S.A. application. F.A.F.S.A stands for "Free Application For Federal Student Aid". You're applying for what's called a "PELL GRANT". 4. You need to have you W-2's and tax forms in front of you because you'll be asked multiple times to enter the amount shown on "line ______" of your W-2 or 1040. 5. Be sure to apply for a Personal Identification Number while you're online. It will save time later. 6. Before hitting "submit" print out copies of what you've typed in and also print out your CONFIRMATION. 7. During the application process, you'll be able to submit schools that you want to receive this information. If you know the school you can atte nd to become a nurse, you can include it or they can request it later. No big deal. 8. In a few weeks... usually 3... you'll get a determination letter. If you're eligible for funds, fine. If you're not eligible, it's NO BIG DEAL at this point. In fact, if you had a full time job before your lay off, it's likely you WILL NOT be eligible for any money. So why do this? Because you have to. The other benefits don't "kick in" until they know you're not eligible for a Pell Grant. If you are eligible for a Pell grant, other benefits may "kick in" to cover the aspects of becoming a nurse that cost you money but aren't covered by Pell. If you've done the already CONGRATULATIONS. Now we'll see what other benefits you may be eligible for. This is the point where MOST people STOP. But since you have this resource you know you're just getting started! There are two more programs to investigate if you're serious about becoming a nurse! At the time of this writing, the FAFSA website looks like this (it's always subject to change but it hasn't changed substantially in several years). You'll be clicki ng Item 2 in order to fill out your application: The other two funding sources at the Federal level you must now inquire about are funds available under two related but separate programs "TAA" and "WIA". Both are administered by different staff people who in theory and many times in practice actually cooperate! |
