Details:
"I don't see much of a difference between artists like The Cure or Stevie Wonder... great songs are great songs!" says California singer/songwriter Greg Dean "My Mom got me into music......Motown, The Beatles, all kinds of stuff. I'd listen to Bowie , Simon and Garfunkel, everything. I went to a different school every year, sometimes two, so I got to hear a ton of different music...it was very cool. At the big gatherings," Greg's father is part Chickasaw Indian,"I'd hear the shakers, rattles, and drums and then go home to the same kinda grooves on myMom's 8 track tapes.. Looking back, it makes perfect sense that I ended up writing songs."
Greg started sculpting his sound while attending the University of California Santa Barbara . After a move to the San Fransisco Bay Area he recorded with Dean Dinning and Randy Guss of Toad The Wet Sprocket. His spacey electric guitar and beat-driven moody pop songs have been likened to Nick Drake, David Gray, and Jeff Buckley. He's been a featured artist on venerable Bay Area stations 99.3 kcsf and 103.3 kscu and shortly before self-releasing his debut album, the subtle art of distraction, he landed the #1 position on Garageband.com, the website launched by producer and former Talking Head Jerry Harrison. The press has been more than kind. British magazine Future Music recently gave Greg a kind nod and Music Connection Magazine raves "a tuneful balance of light and dark" and recently placed him in their best unsigned bands issue. 2003 saw Greg win an honorable mention in Los Angeles' Diy Music and Film Festival, an opening show at San Fransisco's Historic Fillmore Theater, and a prime slot in Canada's largest music festival, North By Northeast. 2004 is off to a good start, Greg just returned from South by Southwest and is currently recording his new album.
