Symptoms of Depression
Depression is a psychiatric condition that affects people from all walks of life. Depression interferes with a person's normal life and daily routines. Depression is a debilitating condition that brings life of a person to a grinding halt. Depression is a psychiatric disorder that has to be treated immediately. People with depression may not be aware of their psychiatric condition and may be suffering silently until diagnosis of depression is made. For severe depression, inpatient psychiatric hospitalization may be required. There are different types of depressive disorders. They are major depressive disorder, dysthymic disorder, Psychotic depression, postpartum depression, and Seasonal affective disorder. The symptoms of depression include: * * * * * Persistent sadness, anxiety, and feelings of "emptiness." Feelings of hopelessness, helplessness, and worthlessness. Feelings of guilt and pessimism. Feelings of irritability, restlessness, anger, and agitated behavior. Loss of interest.

Decreased energy, fatigue, loss of sleep and appetite. Excessive sleeping and overeating. Suicidal ideations.

Depression is mostly an inherited condition and runs in families. Chemical imbalance in the brain is found to be the major cause of depression. Family and social stressors may also trigger underlying depression. Alcohol and drugs also trigger depression. Discontinuing psychiatric medications all of a sudden may also serve as a trigger for an episode of depression. Symptoms of depression mostly start during adolescence and gradually may worsen with age. Psychiatric medications are found to be effective in treating symptoms of depression. Psychiatric medications should not be discontinued by the patient without the permission of the psychiatrist as this may increase symptoms of depression and may complicate the condition. Depression may also develop due to an underlying anxiety disorder. Antidepressant medications are most commonly prescribed to treat symptoms of depression. SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) medications are found to be very effective in treating symptoms of depression. Depression c
an be managed effectively with proper psychiatric treatment. Relaxation techniques such as
