Details:
The Gallery is the third release from the Venice trio, Devastating Karate. The new album displays the versatility of the band, with a consistent sense of humor. Devastating Karate kicks off The Gallery with psychedelic keyboards and Carl Sagen-esq narration, leading into the sci-fi themed âCrab Man,â before track two displays the bandâs foot-stompinâ rockabilly style with âMashed Potatoes.â Featuring an extensive guitar intro, the infectious âDonât Spit It Outâ is a tongue-in-cheek tribute to the metal-pop bands of the â80s, while the title-track switches gears to tell an epic ghost story showcasing the bandâs artistic songwriting skills. Also featuring eclectic cover material from Ween and Celine Dion, The Gallery is a unique and triumphant combination of art-punk, surf-rock and roots-country.
Formed in the summer of 2005, Devastating Karate is fronted by guitarist Rat Ratliff with Zach Lewis on drums and Charles Pasarell playing bass. Described as âhonky-tonk, punk-rock drinking musicâ (Eric and Robert, KXLU, Los Angeles), Devastating Karate released a self-titled album later that same year, followed by a Southwest tour in the spring of 2006. The 2007 release of their sophomore effort, Santa Monica Lawn Bowling Park (EP), was supported by two West Coast tours and regular performances in the Los Angeles area. Influenced by groups ranging from Wilco and Kings of Leon, to Devo, Fu Manchu and The Pixies, Devastating Karateâs power, energy and sense of humor equip them with a âtimeless quality that will probably transcend trends and fadsâ (Terrance Lam, GM, Downtown Records). Compared to The Supersuckers and classified as âDesert Americana Boogieâ by Duncan Hudson (Music Director, KXCI, Tucson), Devastating Karate currently receives airplay in several markets including Los Angeles, San Diego, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Santa Cruz, Tucson, San Antonio, Dayton and Las Cruces
