The story of The Levins
Ira Scott Levin has been a Jewish Song leader as well as Childrenâs entertainer in the Bay Area and beyond since 1996. Ira recorded his first childrenâs and folk CD with his friend and colleague T. Hallenbeck in 1999 and 2000 (Hippo on my Head and The Sultan of Time respectively). Ira and T. began to play out as a duo for a time and then took a detour from each other. In that time Ira met Julia Bordenaro at the Northern California Songwriters Association and the two of them became such good friends that they got married. While they were courting, Julia sang on Iraâs first Jewish CD: Madlik Oti and Mr. Hallenbeck lent a hand and performed with them at the CDâs release performance. After that Julia and T. joined forces in an eclectic band called Thread. Julia and T. then rejoined Ira for the production of his second childrenâs CD: Hyperactive Talking Cows. (Ira got to sing the first track: Ruby, the Rescue Cow on PBS Kids) and the three are the main force behind Iraâs childrenâs band: Uncle Eye & The Strange Change Machine. Ira and Julia have also performed across the country as a duo singing for both childrenâs and Jewish festivals and events, as well as regularly at Temple Emmanuelâs late Shabbat on the second Friday of the month in SF.

They formed The Levins and began recording their first CD: 36 (based on the legend of the 36 Lamed Vavniks: the silent saints who keep the world in balance with their selfless benevolence.) T. had played with Aharon Wheels Bolsta on another recording session and
recommended that he be invited to join in. Aharonâs mastery of many world styles lent itself to the groupâs message. The alchemy of these musicians including guest appearances from Vocolotâs percussionist Liz Stuart and Temple Emmanuelâs stand up bass player Jonathan Ferris has created a unique form of music called âMystic Folkâ.

The CD was released in Amsterdam, where Ira and Julia were asked to join 24 acts from 15 different countries at the International Jewish Music Festival. Later this summer they will record their next CD based on the mystical poetry of Hafiz.

The Levins can perform as a four piece, a trio, duo or a larger ensemble.
