Cantoamérica is a group of Costa Rican music whose repertoire is based in the Afro-Caribbean heritage and the influences of the African diaspora in Costa Rica. His action pioneer in the revitalization of calypso limonense place it as one of the largest groups in the middle musical and cultural life of their country. Cantoamérica has carried out some twenty international tours to countries in North, Central and South americas, Europe and Asia. His music has been heard at festivals of the stature of Vancouver Folk Music Festival, Paul Masson Summer Series, Ollin Kan, Cabrillo Music Festival.
It is based in San Pedro Montes de Oca, Costa Rica in 1980. Its original members are [Manuel Monestel, Rodrigo Salas, Monestel Bernal, Carlos Saavedra and Roberto Huertas.
In 1982 he performed his first recording with the album's love will continue. Then come 11 discs most over 28 years of experience.
His music is inspired by the Afro-Caribbean culture of Costa Rica with emphasis on calypso and its leading figures such as Walter Ferguson, Herberth Glinton, and Cyril Silvan Pope Tun. His repertoire is built from updated versions of calypso limonense and creations of its director Manuel Monestel. This repertoire is steeped in various Caribbean sounds and rhythms and their texts reflect distinct identity traits of Costa Rica in its components African descent, indigenous and Europeans. For Cantoamérica have passed the country's current best musicians including figures like Edin Solis and Carlos "tape" of Editus Vargas. In its shareholdings in international festivals and tours Cantoamérica has interacted with Silvio Rodriguez, Mercedes Sosa, Chico Buarque, Pablo Milanes, Roberto Carlos, Carlos Varela, Jaime Roos, Daniel Viglietti, Andy Palacio, Pete Seeger, Gist, Maldita Vecindad, William Anderson, Gabino Palomares, Tito Fernandez The Temucano, Duo Guardabarranco, Luis Enrique Mejia Godoy, Quilapayún, Phillip Glass, Manuel Obregon, Malpaís, Lord Protector, Piero, Esteban Monge, Guadeloupe Urbina, Oscar Chaves Quintet and Time, among others.
