HappyFourTwenty formed in 2001 and is based Cape Town, South Africa. The style of music emcompasses alternative-rock-pop with tinges of reggae and loads of melody. Their music has been described as R.E.M-ish with the songwriting attention of the Beatles. The bands diverse influences can be heard in their songs which are written by various members of the band. Pete Woodbridge- vocals, keyboards, percussion & guitar, Alan Benatar-bass, Andrew Hoare-guitar & Kent O’Shea-vocals, guitar&keyboards all contribute to the songs the band performs and records. Other musicians and singers have also added their creativity to these songs over the years. Clinton Bester-drums is the current resident 5th member in the band having replaced Patrick Dilley who has changed direction and is facilitating drumming workshops with traditional African drumming rythms. The band released their debut album 'Awakening' in 2003. They are currently working on material for their 2nd album due for release early 2005. HFT perform live regularly in the Cape Town area. The name HappyFourTwenty comes from the American violation code 420 for possession of the cannabis plant whether for medicinal, industrial or recreational use. US citizens have protested against this law since the 60's by smoking a joint at 4.20 am/pm. Some American DJ's have been heard wishing their listeners a Happy FourTwenty @ 16.20 or 04.20!
